Hi Fly Airbus A380: Boom or Bust?

Lisbon, Portugal based charter airline Hi Fly has announced that it plans to acquire an Airbus A380. The carrier plans to configured the aircraft with 471 seats, with 12 in first class, 60 in business class, and 399 in economy class. The A380 is scheduled to begin flights with the airline in mid 2018, and is a leased aircraft that was returned by Singapore Airlines.

Hi Fly will become the fourth airline based in Europe to operate the aircraft along with Air France, British Airways, and Lufthansa, but will be the first as a dedicated charter airline. The A380 has seen slow sales, as the logistics of continuing to be able to fill 550 plus seats on a consistent basis has been a challenge for most operators. One has to wonder how a charter airline will be able to operate the aircraft with not only enough paying passengers, but also enough of a schedule frequency to be able to cover the acquisition and operational costs?

Hi Fly currently operates a fleet of 8 Airbus aircraft, including 1 A321-200, 3 A330-200’s, and 4 A340’s. The carrier also has 12 A330’s on order, with 2 A330-200’s also scheduled to enter service starting this June. The other 10 are A330-900neo’s, as well as plans for a second A380. This seems like a huge increase in capacity for the carrier, but they also provide “for hire” services to other airlines. If another airline is unable to operate a flight due to maintenance or scheduling issues, they can call Hi Fly to operate that flight for them. Only time will tell if the increase in the carrier’s revenues can cover their costs.

Ryanair to buy 25 more Boeing 737 MAX aircraft

DUBLIN (Reuters) – Ryanair (RYA.I) has agreed to buy a further 25 Boeing (BA.N) 737 MAX planes, worth $3 billion at list prices, lifting its order of the U.S. planemaker’s flagship short-haul plane model to 135, the two companies said on Tuesday.

The Irish low-cost carrier, which is the largest operator of Boeing planes in Europe, purchased 100 737 MAX planes in 2014 and took out options on 100 more.

Ryanair said the order leaves it with 75 more options.

It purchased 10 additional MAX planes in June last year, which were on top of the 2014 order.

Chief Executive Michael O’Leary in March said he expected to exercise “pretty much all” of its options.

Ryanair has dubbed the MAX a “game changer” for its business, due to a fuel consumption improvement it says could be up to 16 percent and a greater number of seats.

The configuration Ryanair has ordered has 197 seats compared to 189 in its current fleet of 737s.

Ryanair rivals easyJet (EZJ.L) and Wizz (WIZZ.L) have ordered Airbus (AIR.PA) A321 planes, which seat up to 239 passengers.

Ryanair (RYA.I) has held talks with Boeing about its new larger version of the 737 airliner, the MAX 10, which can carry up to 230 passengers, but has made clear it would only be interested if the price is lowered.

The first of Ryanair’s 737 MAX planes are due for delivery in the first half of 2019 and will use CFM Leap-1B engines.

Ryanair, which currently operates around 430 Boeing 737 planes, says the MAX order will allow it reach its target of carrying 200 million passengers per year by 2024.

JetBlue Has a Plan for Beating Alaska Air

Two years ago, JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU) tried to buy trendy West Coast rival Virgin America. However, it ultimately lost a bidding war to Alaska Air (NYSE: ALK), which was eager to expand its strong position in the Pacific Northwest to the rest of the West Coast.

JetBlue responded with an aggressive plan to gain market share on transcontinental routes. The linchpin of this strategy was the expansion of Mint, JetBlue’s highly acclaimed premium service, to a slew of new routes. So far, this strategy has been extremely successful, and it is putting a ton of pressure on Alaska Air in the transcontinental market.

Hawaiian Airlines rumored to be dumping Airbus for Boeing

Boeing Co. has reportedly convinced Hawaiian Airlines to cancel an existing order with overseas rival Airbus in favor of an unspecified number of the Chicago-based aerospace giant’s 787-9 Dreamliners.

Scott Hamilton, editor of aerospace website Leeham News & Comment, was the first to report that the Honolulu-based carrier will cancel its order for six A330-800 wide-bodies built by Airbus and flip its order to Boeing. An official announcement could come by the end of this week.

La Compagnie Places Order For 2 Airbus A321-NEO Aircraft

La Compagnie, an all business class airline flying between New York (Newark International) and Paris (Charles de Gaulle), announced an order for 2 new Airbus A321-NEO aircraft last month. The boutique air carrier placed the order three years after launching as an exclusively business-class airline on the 4th of July in 2014, and one year after adding a second daily flight between New York and Paris. The airline currently uses a fleet of two Boeing 757 aircraft that are outfitted with 74 lie-flat seats.

La Compagnie, French for “The Company”, is accelerating its development with the order of the two Airbus A321-NEO aircraft. The investment marks a major milestone for the still-young airline, revealing its plan for stable growth and future route expansion. Due for delivery in 2019, the new modern, efficient and eco-friendly A321-NEO aircraft will take La Compagnie’s in-flight business-class experience to a new level. The planes will be equipped with the latest in technology, Wi-Fi, and full lie-flat beds. This should allow its passengers to be well-connected and well-rested upon arrival in New York or Paris.

The airline joined forces with XL Airways in 2016, and has progressively focused on optimizing its performance across all fronts. The choice of the French aeronautical firm Airbus strengthens La Compagnie’s French spirit and philosophy that has made the carrier desirable for intercontinental passengers. The airline has always been an advocate for the French business community, and with the selection of Airbus and the A321-NEO, they are able to illuminate their French touch and travel experience.

Hijacked EgyptAir plane lands in Cyprus

A Hijacked EgyptAir plane has now landed in Cyprus after a passenger claiming to be wearing a bomb belt seized control of the aircraft. The plane was on its way to Cairo from Alexandria in Egypt. The motive for the hijacking is currently unclear, but at this point it has not been confirmed to be related to any organized terrorist group. The man in control of the Hijacked EgyptAir plane has not been identified. The hijacker has reportedly requested that an envelope he was carrying be delivered to a woman who lives in Cyprus. There are also conflicting accounts of the number of passengers and crew that were aboard the airplane, but it is believed to be somewhere between 62 and 86 people. Around 56 passengers were later released from the Airbus A320 aircraft.

Hijacked EgyptAir plane still holding 7 people

Many hours after the plane arrived in Cyprus, three passengers and four crew members are reportedly still being held on the aircraft. Sky News Europe has stated that the flight departed at 8 o’clock in the morning from Alexandria, Egypt. About 30 minutes after takeoff, the hijacker managed to seize control of the plane. The hijacker then contacted the control tower in Lanarka, Cyprus, and requested permission to land. The Israeli military  scrambled several fighter jet aircraft to protect the nations airspace as a precautionary response.

This hijacking comes just five months after a Russian airplane crashed over the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, killing all 224 passengers on board the plane. The cause of that crash has been linked to a terrorist group that claims to have brought down the plane with an explosive device. This incident also comes just one week after terrorists struck the airport and a Metro station in Brussels, Belgium.

Update: The man who hijacked an EgyptAir flight from Alexandria to Cairo has released the remaining passengers and crew. He has left the aircraft and surrendered to police. He has been identified as Eldin Mustafa, and reportedly hijacked the plane to visit a woman in Cyrpus.
