EgyptAir Adds More Boeing 787s to Fleet as Dreamliners Deliver 23% Fuel Boost

Airline joins other operators in growing their Dreamliner fleet after achieving eye-opening fuel efficiency improvement

EGYPTAIR is growing its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet with an agreement to lease two more airplanes from AerCap, the airline announced today at the Dubai Airshow. The Egyptian flag carrier unveiled it had selected the super-efficient airplane to modernize its fleet during the last Dubai Airshow in 2017.

The carrier began operating the 787-9 this year, deploying the Dreamliner on new direct flights from its hub in Cairo to Washington, D.C., and other cities. EGYPTAIR says the 787s have delivered on the Dreamliner’s promise of unmatched efficiency, providing a 23-percent reduction in fuel consumption compared to the airplanes they replaced.

“The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has outperformed our expectations, helping us significantly reduce our fuel use and emissions, while bringing comfort to our passengers,” said Ahmed Adel, chairman and CEO of EGYPTAIR Holding Company. “We look forward to growing our network with additional 787-9 airplanes and flying more passengers to their destinations at an affordable cost.”

To maintain its fleet of 787’s, the carrier also announced agreements with Boeing this week that would provide EGYPTAIR with global access to critical aircraft components, including a Landing Gear Exchange and Quick Engine Change kit solutions.

EGYPTAIR joins other 787 operators in expanding its commitment to the Dreamliner program after experiencing the airplane in revenue service. More than half of all 787 customers have placed repeat orders for the airplane, helping the Dreamliner become the fastest-selling widebody airplane in history. The biggest 787 customer is Dublin-based AerCap with 117 airplanes owned and on order. AerCap will lease a total of eight 787’s to EGYPTAIR.

At 63 meters (206 feet) long, the 787-9 can fly 296 passengers, in a typical two-class configuration, up to 7,530 nautical miles (13,950 kilometers). The airplane is 6 meters longer than the original Dreamliner and is capable of carrying 48 more passengers with increased range. The 787 Dreamliner family has won more than 1450 orders from over 80 customers on six continents.

CIAF Leasing Signs Order with Embraer for Three E190 Jets

Dubai, UAE, November 17, 2019 – Embraer and Cairo-based CIAF Leasing have signed a firm order for three E190 aircraft. The deal has a value of USD 161.4 million at current list prices and will be added to Embraer’s fourth quarter backlog.

The three new aircraft will join CIAF’s existing fleet of three E170s, two of which are on lease with Jasmin Airways, the other with Air Cairo. CIAF are also due to receive two E195s in mid-November.

All three aircraft will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2020, in a new livery showing off CIAF’s new visual identity.

Boeing and EgyptAir Maintenance & Engineering Sign MRO Service Agreement

Supply chain deals include Landing Gear Exchange and Quick Engine Change kit solutions
Companies also establish agreement to add regional MRO provider to Boeing’s growing global network

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Nov. 17, 2019 — Boeing [NYSE:BA] and EGYPTAIR MAINTENANCE & ENGINEERING (EGME) today announced agreements that will approve the Cairo-based MRO as Boeing’s first maintenance supplier in Africa and the Middle East region. The agreement enables EGME to provide aircraft, engines and component maintenance services and solutions to Boeing customers.

EGME will also receive landing gear exchange and overhaul support through the Boeing Landing Gear Exchange Program. The program provides flexible exchange solutions that allow customers to quickly repair and replace serviceable landing gear in hours.

Boeing will also supply parts for a Quick Engine Change kit. The kit includes hardware and components used to efficiently build up a spare engine to service-ready condition, lowering the maintenance time required to replace an engine and return aircraft to service.

“EGYPTAIR is optimizing operations for our growing fleet, which includes a sixth 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, to always deliver a better experience for our customers,” said Ahmed Adel, chairman and CEO of EGYPTAIR Holding Company. “We are able to leverage the strength of a global supply chain network and increase efficiency by continuing to partner with Boeing.”

First Egypt Air A220-300 Makes Maiden Flight

The first A220-300 for EgyptAir has successfully completed its inaugural test flight from the Mirabel assembly line. The first of 12 aircraft EgyptAir has on order is due to be delivered to the Cairo-based airline in the coming weeks.

The A220 for EgyptAir will provide passengers with superior comfort, its innovative cabin design featuring the widest economy seats of any single-aisle aircraft, and panoramic windows for more natural light. The aircraft, which is outfitted with a brand new cabin layout of 134 seats, will now enter its final phase of completion before delivery.

The A220 delivers unbeatable fuel efficiency and true wide-body comfort in a single-aisle aircraft. The A220 brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines to offer at least 20% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. With a range of up to 3,400 nm (6,300 km), the A220 offers the performance of larger single-aisle aircraft.

Bombardier, Orascom, and Arab Contractors Win Egypt Monorail Contract

Bombardier Transportation, Orascom Construction PLC and Arab Contractors have signed an agreement today with National Authority for Tunnels in Cairo to design and build two new monorail lines in Egypt. On completion of the construction phase, the consortium will be responsible for the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of both lines for 30 years. The total value of the design, build and O&M contract exceeds $4.5 billion US (4.1 billion euro). Bombardier Transportation´s share is $2.85 billion US (2.6 billion euro). Orascom Construction’s share of the overall contract is close to $900 million US. The agreement is subject to final signatures of supplementary documents.

Orascom Construction will design and build all infrastructure and civil works, including stations, guideway structures and new depot buildings.

British Airways Suspends Flights to Cairo for Seven Days

CAIRO, July 20 (Reuters) – British Airways and Lufthansa abruptly suspended flights to Cairo from Saturday over security concerns, but giving no details about what may have prompted the move.

“We constantly review our security arrangements at all our airports around the world, and have suspended flights to Cairo for seven days as a precaution to allow for further assessment,” British Airways said in a statement.

Lufthansa later said it had cancelled its flights to Cairo on Saturday from Munich and Frankfurt and will resume its flights on Sunday

British Airways, a unit of IAG, also said that it would never operate an aircraft unless it was safe to do so. When asked for more details about why flights had been suspended and what security arrangements the airline was reviewing, a spokeswoman responded: “We never discuss matters of security.”

Three Egyptian airport security sources told Reuters that British staff had been checking security at Cairo airport on Wednesday and Thursday. They gave no further details.

The British Foreign Office updated its travel advisory on Saturday to add a reference to the British Airways’ suspension, advising travellers affected to contact the airline.

Egypt’s Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a statement late on Saturday that it had contacted the British Embassy in Cairo which had confirmed that the decision to suspend the flights was not issued by Britain’s transport or foreign ministries.

The Egyptian ministry added that it will add more flights from Cairo to London starting on Sunday “to facilitate transporting passengers during this period.”

The British government has long advised against all but essential travel by air to and from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where a Russian passenger jet was bombed in 2015, but has not issued similar warnings against air travel to and from Cairo.

“There’s a heightened risk of terrorism against aviation. Additional security measures are in place for flights departing from Egypt to the UK,” the British advisory says.

Tourism, a key source of foreign revenue for Egypt, has been recovering after tourist numbers dropped in the wake of a 2011 uprising and the 2015 bombing of the Russian jet, which killed all 224 people on board shortly after takeoff.

That attack, which was claimed by Islamic State, prompted Russia to halt all flights to Egypt for several years and a number of countries including Britain to cease flights to Sharm el Sheikh, which have yet to resume.

Bombardier Preferred Bidder for €3 billion Cairo Monorail

Two new monorail lines to connect East Cairo with New Administrative City and 6^th October City to Giza

Bombardier Transportation has been named preferred bidder to build and supply a new monorail system in Cairo, Egypt.

The potential value of the bid for Bombardier Transportation is €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion US) for the Design & Build Contract. In addition, there is a 15 + 15 years Operations and Maintenance deal with a potential value of about €1.1 billion ($1.2 billion US). The rolling stock part of the order will be developed and built in Derby, UK.

The project is for the delivery of a 54km monorail system connecting the New Administrative City with East Cairo as well as a second 42km line connecting 6th October City with Giza. Bombardier Transportation will deliver the project in partnership with two Egyptian companies Orascom Construction and the Arab Contractors.

The order award is subject to contract and final confirmation.

Hijacked EgyptAir plane lands in Cyprus

A Hijacked EgyptAir plane has now landed in Cyprus after a passenger claiming to be wearing a bomb belt seized control of the aircraft. The plane was on its way to Cairo from Alexandria in Egypt. The motive for the hijacking is currently unclear, but at this point it has not been confirmed to be related to any organized terrorist group. The man in control of the Hijacked EgyptAir plane has not been identified. The hijacker has reportedly requested that an envelope he was carrying be delivered to a woman who lives in Cyprus. There are also conflicting accounts of the number of passengers and crew that were aboard the airplane, but it is believed to be somewhere between 62 and 86 people. Around 56 passengers were later released from the Airbus A320 aircraft.

Hijacked EgyptAir plane still holding 7 people

Many hours after the plane arrived in Cyprus, three passengers and four crew members are reportedly still being held on the aircraft. Sky News Europe has stated that the flight departed at 8 o’clock in the morning from Alexandria, Egypt. About 30 minutes after takeoff, the hijacker managed to seize control of the plane. The hijacker then contacted the control tower in Lanarka, Cyprus, and requested permission to land. The Israeli military scrambled several fighter jet aircraft to protect the nations airspace as a precautionary response.

This hijacking comes just five months after a Russian airplane crashed over the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, killing all 224 passengers on board the plane. The cause of that crash has been linked to a terrorist group that claims to have brought down the plane with an explosive device. This incident also comes just one week after terrorists struck the airport and a Metro station in Brussels, Belgium.

Update: The man who hijacked an EgyptAir flight from Alexandria to Cairo has released the remaining passengers and crew. He has left the aircraft and surrendered to police. He has been identified as Eldin Mustafa, and reportedly hijacked the plane to visit a woman in Cyrpus.
