Honeywell Forecasts 7,600 New Business Jet Deliveries Over Next Decade

– 28th annual Global Business Aviation Outlook projects 2020 deliveries to be higher than 2019 as new models enter service

– Five-year purchase plans for new business jets down slightly, but plans to buy used jets grow significantly

– Long-range forecast predicts healthy market with steady annual growth

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 20, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — The business jet industry is expected to see strong growth in the short to medium term, supported by several new airplane models coming to the market, according to Honeywell’s (HON) 28th annual Global Business Aviation Outlook. Released today, the Global Business Aviation Outlook forecasts up to 7,600 new business jet deliveries worth $248 billion from 2020 to 2029, down 1 to 2 percentage points from the 2018 10-year forecast.

“Production ramp up on many new business jet platforms are expected to lead to a 7% increase in deliveries in 2020, following a strong projected growth in 2019 over 2018 aircraft deliveries,” said Heath Patrick, president, Americas Aftermarket, Honeywell Aerospace. “We are confident that these new and innovative aircraft models will support solid growth in the short term and have a continuing impact on new business jet purchases in the midterm and long term.”

Key findings in the 2019 Honeywell global outlook include:

  • Operators plan to make new jet purchases equivalent to about 17% of their fleets over the next five years as replacements or additions to their current fleet, a decrease of 3 percentage points compared with 2018 survey results. 
  • Of the total purchase plans for new business jets over the next 5 years, 35% are expected to occur in the first two years of the survey, with 57% of purchase plans realized by year three. This is 5 percentage points higher than last year’s survey. 
  • Operators continue to focus on larger-cabin aircraft classes, from large cabin through ultralong-range aircraft, which are expected to account for more than 71% of all expenditures of new business jets in the next five years.

Electric Vehicle Startup Rivian Gets Big Van Order From Amazon.com

DETROIT, Sept 19 (Reuters) – Electric vehicle startup Rivian Automotive LLC got a big boost from one of its investors on Thursday when Amazon.com announced it was ordering 100,000 electric delivery vans.

Before Rivian has even begun commercial production at its factory in Normal, Illinois, the Amazon order rocketed it to the forefront of electric vehicle makers.

Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said in Washington that as part of the online retailer’s plan to be carbon neutral by 2040 it would order the electric vans from Rivian, with deliveries starting in 2021. The goal is to deploy all the vehicles by 2024.

Rivian, a potential rival to Silicon Valley’s Tesla Inc, unveiled its electric R1T pickup and R1S SUV last November, but had piqued Amazon’s interest earlier. Bezos personally reached out to Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe last summer to express interest in an investment, sources previously said.

Plymouth, Michigan-based Rivian, founded in 2009, has raised close to $1.9 billion from investors, including a $700 million February round led by Amazon.

The deal solidifies Rivian’s place among EV builders, said Sam Fiorani, a vice president with Auto Forecast Solutions. “It helps boost the image of the (Rivian) brand,” he said.

Rivian aspires to be the first to produce a mass market electric pickup. It intends to begin selling its R1T by the end of 2020, a target that has not changed with the Amazon deal in place, said Rivian spokeswoman Amy Mast said.

Traditional U.S. automakers Ford Motor Co, a Rivian investor, and General Motors Co, as well as Tesla, are pushing to develop their own electric pickups.

The Amazon vans, under the exclusive deal, will be built at Rivian’s plant, a former Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois, Mast said. The first vehicles will be delivered in 2021 and 10,000 should be on the road by late 2022, she said. The vehicles will be serviced by Rivian.

Scaringe has described the Rivian vehicle’s platform as a skateboard that packages the drive units, battery pack, suspension system, brakes and cooling system all below wheel height to allow for more storage space and greater stability due to a lower center of gravity.

Amazon is looking to speed packages to shoppers’ doorsteps regardless of spikes in consumer demand or shortages of delivery personnel. Last year, Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz said Amazon had become the biggest customer of its Sprinter vans, securing 20,000 vehicles for delivery contractors.

Ford invested $500 million in Rivian in April with plans to use the Rivian EV platform to build a new vehicle in North America. Details of that vehicle were not disclosed. Ford is not involved in the Rivian deal, Mast said.

Cox Automotive Inc, the owner of the Autotrader online automobile market and the Kelley Blue Book car valuation service, invested $350 million in Rivian this month. The companies will explore partnerships in digital retailing, service operations and logistics.

Other backers include Saudi auto distributor Abdul Latif Jameel Co, Sumitomo Corp of Americas and Standard Chartered Bank.

Amazon’s reputation and the contract size would raise Rivian’s status with potential customers and investors, Fiorani said. It also offers the advantage of not having to chase buyers or ship vehicles all over the country.

Discount Carrier Sun Country Prepares for IPO

Sun Country Airlines,a small Minnesota-based, low-cost carrier owned by private-equity firm Apollo Global Management, plans to file for an initial public offering as soon as April, Sun Country’s CEO said Tuesday in an interview.

“Our earnings are supportive,” Jude Bricker told Skift at the International Aviation Forecast Summit in Las Vegas. “I think there’s a market for an airline that is growing.”

If Sun Country were to go public next year, it would be a fast turnaround for Apollo, which acquired the airline in December 2017. The previous owners, Mitch and Marty Davis, who also control Cambria, a maker of stone countertops, had managed Sun Country more like a family business than a medium-sized airline. Apollo has cut costs and changed the model, dropping first class, adding fees and making more it like Frontier Airlines or Spirit Airlines than an undersized competitor to Delta Air Lines or American Airlines.

Daimler Cuts 2019 Profit Outlook on Diesel Issues

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Daimler has cut its earnings outlook for this year after lifting provisions for issues related to its diesel vehicles by “a high three-digit million euro amount”, the carmaker said on Sunday.

Group earnings before interest and tax for 2019 are now expected to be at last year’s level. Previously, the carmaker had expected the figure to be “slightly higher”.

The revision is related to an increase in expected expenses linked to “various ongoing governmental proceedings and measures with regard to Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles,” the company said.

A spokesman declined to elaborate on the nature of those issues.

However, Sunday’s profit warning follows news over the weekend that Daimler must recall 60,000 Mercedes diesel cars in Germany after regulators found that they were fitted with software aimed at distorting emissions tests.

The transportation ministry said it was expanding its investigation into further models.

The company also said it was reducing its forecast for the return on sales for Mercedes-Benz vans.

It now sees a return between minus 2% and minus 4%, below its previous forecast of a return on sales of 0% to 2%.

Air Transport Services Group 1Q Earnings Snapshot

WILMINGTON, Ohio (AP) – Air Transport Services Group Inc. (ATSG) on Tuesday reported first-quarter profit of $22.7 million.

The Wilmington, Ohio-based company said it had profit of 25 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 37 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 28 cents per share.

The air cargo company posted revenue of $348.2 million in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $306 million.

Air Transport Services shares have fallen nearly 4% since the beginning of the year. The stock has increased nearly 7% in the last 12 months.

Lockheed Martin Raises 2019 Profit Forecast, Shares Jump

(Reuters) – Lockheed Martin Corp reported a better-than-expected 47 percent jump in quarterly profit on Tuesday and raised its annual profit forecast, helped by strong demand for its missiles and fighter jets, sending its shares up more than 5 percent in pre-market trading.

U.S. weapons makers have been expected to benefit from stronger global demand for fighter jets and munitions and higher U.S. defence budgets in fiscal 2020 as they announce first quarter earnings this week.

Lockheed’s Missiles and Fire Control business, which makes missile defences like the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD), was one of its best-performing units.

On April 1, the unit was awarded a THAAD interceptor missile contract worth $2.4 billion, some of which are slated to be delivered to Saudi Arabia, which could boost earnings for the current quarter.

Overall, the Bethesda, Maryland-based company said its earnings rose to $1.70 billion, or $5.99 per share, in the first quarter ended March 31, from $1.16 billion, or $4.02 per share, a year earlier. That was partly helped by a $75 million dollar boost from additional tax deductions on foreign military sales.

Excluding that one-time gain, Lockheed reported $5.73 per share profit, well ahead of the $4.34 per share that Wall Street had expected, on average, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Lockheed’s overall net sales for the quarter rose 23 percent to $14.34 billion. The company’s sales backlog grew to $133.5 billion, up 3 billion over the quarter.

Operating margins at the aeronautics division, Lockheed’s biggest, fell to 10.5 percent in the first quarter from 10.8 percent a year earlier, but sales were up 27 percent to $5.5 billion on demand for the F-35 jet and some classified contracts.

The United States is considering expanding sales of Lockheed-made F-35 fighter jets to five new nations including Romania, Greece and Poland as European allies bulk up their defences in the face of a strengthening Russia, a Pentagon official told Congress in early April.

Southwest Airlines Cuts 2019 Growth Forecast

(Reuters) – Southwest Airlines Co cut its forecast for first-quarter revenue per seat mile on Wednesday, citing weak passenger demand and a $60 million hit to first-quarter sales from the longest partial U.S. government shutdown.

The more than month-long hiatus in U.S. government decision-making prevented the country’s fourth-largest airline from launching its new route to Hawaii and led to widespread delays at airports.

Southwest had said previously that it expected a $10 million to $15 million impact on revenue in the first three weeks of January.

On Wednesday, it quadrupled that for the full quarter and cut its growth estimate for unit revenue to a range of 3 percent to 4 percent from an earlier range of 4 percent to 5 percent.

Shares of the company, which has also been cancelling flights in recent days due to a conflict with maintenance staff and weather issues, fell nearly 5 percent in early trading, with a Goldman Sachs “sell” recommendation for investors adding to the pain.

Though the company has now received permissions for test flights to Hawaii, Goldman Sachs analyst Catherine O’Brien argued the shutdown would result in a shortened selling window for the airline, forcing it to discount fares heavily.

“Most of the company’s schedule is published eight months in advance and we would have expected a three to six month selling window for its Hawaii flights,” O’Brien wrote in a note, downgrading the stock to “sell” from “neutral”.

“We now expect initial flights to have a one to one and a half month selling window, putting more pressure on management to fill planes in a shorter time frame,” she added, cutting price target on the stock to $54 from $66.

Southwest shares were last down 4.1 percent at $55.30.

The company said on Tuesday it would be investigating a doubling of the number of planes grounded with mechanical problems in recent days as it continues talks with its mechanics union on a new contract that have been ongoing since 2012.

Flight cancellations by Southwest accounted for roughly 24 percent of the nearly 800 total flights canceled across the United States on Tuesday, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.com.

About half of the cancellations were related to unscheduled maintenance issues but the airline said it had yet to calculate the impact of the groundings on its results.

Embraer Presents Preliminary Forecast for 2019 and 2020

São José dos Campos, Brazil, January 16, 2019 – Embraer today presents its preliminary forecast for 2019 and 2020 at a meeting with investors at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). For 2019, Embraer expects to deliver between 85 and 95 commercial jets, 90 to 110 executive jets, including light and large jets, 10 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft and two multi-mission KC390 aircraft. Total consolidated revenues should be between US$ 5.3 billion and US$ 5.7 billion.

The Company expects to achieve a consolidated EBIT margin of breakeven (approximately zero) for the year 2019. It is important to highlight that 2019 guidance includes potential costs and expenses associated with the creation of the Commercial Aviation JV in a strategic partnership between the Company and The Boeing Co. (“Boeing”) under the terms of the associated material facts published by Embraer.

With the finalization and closure of the partnership operation described above, tentatively expected to occur by the end of 2019, Embraer anticipates a capital structure without leverage, with a net cash position of approximately US$ 1.0 billion after the payment of a special dividend to shareholders of roughly US$ 1.6 billion (which remains subject to the confirmation of certain requirements, including the fiscal year results).

During the event in New York, Embraer also presents its guidance for the year 2020, the first year after the potential closure of the operation creating the strategic partnership between Embraer and Boeing in Commercial Aviation, as mentioned above. 2018 Estimates Revision Embraer is revising its 2018 guidance for executive jet deliveries, Revenues, Executive Jet revenues, Defense & Security revenues, consolidated and adjusted EBIT, consolidated and adjusted EBIT margin, consolidated and adjusted EBITDA, consolidated and adjusted EBITDA margin, Free Cash Flow and Investments.

Global market conditions for executive jets, although gradually improving, continue to recover more slowly than expected. In combination, Embraer’s increased focus on improving profitability and price preservation, as well as the recent launch of the new midsize/super midsize executive jets (“Praetors”), which will begin delivering in 2019, led the Company to adopt a more cautious approach towards deliveries in 2018. As a result, Embraer delivered 91 total executive jets in 2018 (compared to guidance of 105-125 jets previously).

As a result of the reduction in executive jet deliveries, the Company now expects revenues in the executive jets segment to be approximately US$ 1.1 billion (previously US$ 1.35 billion – US$ 1.50 billion). In addition, the cost base revision for the KC-390 contract in the second quarter of 2018, resulting from the incident involving prototype 001 in May 2018, negatively impacted revenues for the Defense & Security segment. This impact led to a new projection for revenues for the segment, of approximately US$ 0.6 billion (US$ 0.8 billion – US$ 0.9 billion previously). As a result, Embraer’s consolidated revenues for 2018 are now expected to be approximately US$ 5.1 billion, a reduction from the previous range of US$ 5.4 billion – US$ 5.9 billion.

Guidance for consolidated and adjusted EBIT, consolidated and adjusted EBIT margin, consolidated and adjusted EBITDA, and consolidated and adjusted EBITDA margin for 2018 were lowered due largely to lower fixed cost dilution of the Company as a function of lower executive jet volumes and a decline in Defense & Security revenues. The adjusted values for 2018 exclude the impact of US$ 127.2 million related to the cost base revision of the KC-390 contract in the second quarter of 2018, following the incident involving prototype 001 in May 2018.

Embraer also estimates that its spending on investments for 2018 will be roughly US$ 300 million, below its previous expectation for a total of US$ 550 million. It is important to note that the lower spending on investments has not negatively impacted the Company’s ongoing development projects.

As a result of the lower executive jet deliveries, partially offset by the lower spending on investments in 2018, the Company expects that 2018 Free cash flow will be a use of cash of roughly US$ 200 million (versus a use of no more than US$ 100 million in its previous guidance).

Boeing Tops Analysts’ Forecasts For Quarterly Profit

(Reuters) – Boeing (BA.N) topped analysts’ forecasts for quarterly profit on Wednesday despite a series of charges on U.S. military programs and raised its forecasts for annual profit as it continued to benefit from a boom in global air travel and airplanes.

Shares of the world’s biggest planemaker were up 4.5 percent in premarket trading, helping brighten the mood on Wall Street after a handful of shaky results on Tuesday from U.S. manufacturers hurt by concerns over global trade.

Soaring demand from commercial airlines has driven another surge in revenues for Boeing over the past year, pushing shares in the company up by roughly a third over the past 12 months.

Those moves have been dented somewhat by a combination of the trade worries, this year’s greater market volatility and a series of recurring charges for its delay-plagued KC-46 tanker program.

Boeing recorded another $176 million in charges in the quarter on the aerial refueling tanker, bringing the total cost of the program to more than $3 billion.

It also took a charge of $691 million related to the MQ25 refueling drone and T-X training jet contracts it won in August and September, offset in part by a $412 million tax benefit.

Despite the charges, Chief Executive Officer Dennis Muilenburg played up the new T-X and MQ25 business and completion of a static test model of its forthcoming 777X widebody, with two test flight jetliners in production.

“This strong underlying performance, along with growth across our businesses we’ve seen throughout the year, give us confidence to raise our 2018 revenue and earnings guidance and reaffirm our operating cash flow guidance.”

Boeing raised its full-year profit forecast to $14.90-$15.10 from a previous $14.30-$14.50 per share, and revenue to a range of $98 billion to $100 billion, up from $97 billion to $99 billion.

The Chicago-based firm’s core earnings, which exclude some pension and other costs, came in 11 cents above analysts’ average forecast at $3.58 per share in the quarter ended Sept. 30.

Boeing has delivered 568 aircraft in the first nine months of 2018 despite production snarls on its best-selling 737 narrowbody, up from 554 at the end of September a year ago, putting it on track to deliver another record year of plane sales.

That keeps the manufacturer, which aims to deliver between 810-815 planes in 2018, in front of its European rival Airbus SE (AIR.PA), which delivered 503 aircraft through September this year. Airbus shares gained 2.7 percent.

Boeing Delivers First 787-9 Dreamliner to Juneyao Airlines

In other recent Boeing news, the company delivered the first 787-9 Dreamliner for Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines. The new, super-efficient Dreamliner will also be the first widebody commercial jet operated by a privately-held Chinese airline.

“This delivery is our airline’s biggest milestone and marks a big step toward expanding our network in China and beyond,” said Wang Junjin, Chairman, Juneyao Airlines. “As the market-leading widebody model, the 787-9 Dreamliner will play a key role in our global business growth.”

Juneyao Airlines, previously an all-Airbus operator, mainly offers flights from Shanghai to more than 50 cities across China. In introducing the long-range 787 Dreamliner, the carrier is looking to expand its international network and increase flights to Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea.

The 787-9 is part of a family of three airplanes that offer long ranges and unmatched fuel efficiency in the 200 to 350 seat market. The 787-9 can carry 290 passengers and fly up to 7,635 nautical miles (14,140 km), while reducing fuel use and emissions by 20 to 25 percent compared to older airplanes. Passengers will appreciate a more comfortable flight thanks to the Dreamliner’s large windows, lower cabin altitude, smooth-ride technology, and other amenities.
