ATR Congratulates Silver Airways on 1st New ATR 42-600 Flight

Toulouse, 23 April 2019 – Silver Airways yesterday launched its regularly scheduled flights aboard its new ATR -600 series aircraft. The first flight departed Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at 10:40 a.m. and arrived at Key West International Airport at 11:55 am (EST).

Silver Airways, America’s leading independent regional airline, is reinventing the regional flying sector by being the first U.S. carrier to operate the technologically advanced, customer friendly ATR -600 series aircraft. Silver Airways has taken delivery of three new ATR 42-600 aircraft from NAC. The aircraft is specifically designed for short-haul markets, but with the same look, feel and customer amenities of larger jetliners. Yesterday marked the first time revenue passengers have flown on an ATR 42-600 operated by a U.S carrier.

Richard Cole, Last WWII Doolittle Raider, Dies at 103

SAN ANTONIO — Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Richard E. Cole, the last of World War II’s Doolittle Raiders, passed away early Monday morning in San Antonio with his daughter, Cindy, and son, Rich, at his side, according to reports from family and friends.

Cole was 103 years old. Arrangements are being made for a memorial service at Randolph Air Force Base, and Cole will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery. He had been scheduled to be honored in Sarasota on April 7 but was unable to attend the ceremony after being hospitalized.

The Doolittle Raiders were group of 80 Army Air Force aviators who participated in a daring aerial raid on Japan during World War II, bombing seven cities just months after the Japanese had laid waste to American naval power at Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

Cole, though, was humble about his role in the historic raid, which was planned and led by Army Air Force Lt. Col. James “Jimmy” Doolittle of the United States Army Air Forces.

“I don’t think that the Raiders should be remembered any more than the millions of other people who took part in World War II,” he said during a recent interview at the Air Force Armament Museum at Eglin Air Force Base.

The Doolittle Raiders are woven tightly into the historical fabric of this area. For a little more than two weeks in March 1942, they trained at what was then Eglin Field for their improbable mission: launching stripped-down B-25 bombers off the deck of an aircraft carrier and flying hundreds of miles across the Pacific Ocean to bomb Japan.

Less than a month after leaving Eglin Field, on April 18, 1942, the Doolittle Raiders — all volunteers and none of whom had flown a combat mission — boarded 16 B-25 bombers on the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet in the Pacific to start their mission. Cole was in the copilot’s seat of the lead B-25, which was piloted by Doolittle.

Cole also was among the airmen who had to bail out of the the B-25s after the raid. Asked recently about his sharpest memory of the raid, after more than 76 years, Cole had a quick response.

“The thing I remember most is my parachute opening,” he smiled.

Cole was in the area last month, attending a ceremony at Hurlburt Field, headquarters of Air Force Special Operations Command, for a 75th anniversary commemoration of Operation Thursday, another piece of World War II history in which he was involved. Cole was among the aviators involved in the 1944 operation in the China-Burma-India war theater in which early American air pioneers worked alongside British special operations soldiers known as Chindits to extract British soldiers from the forests of Burma. The operation marked the birth of Air Commandos as part of U.S. military aviation forces.

How Wynn Resorts Could Free Up Billions in Cash

One of the trends sweeping through the gaming industry over the past decade is selling real estate to real estate investment trusts (REITs). Sometimes companies control their REITs, like MGM Resorts (NYSE: MGM) does with MGM Growth Properties (NYSE: MGP) and Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ: CZR) does with VIVI Properties(NYSE: VICI), and sometimes real estate is sold to third-party companies. 

REITs free up cash for casino companies, often to the tune of billions of dollars. That money can help reduce debt or fund growth projects, which is attractive because it doesn’t fundamentally change a resort’s operations. But Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ: WYNN) has avoided the temptation to sell most of its real estate over the years. If it did, however, the company could free up billions of dollars in cash.

American Airlines Takes Delivery of its First A321neo

PITTSBURGH — After an 8 1/2-hour nonstop journey from Hamburg, Germany (XFW), the newest member of the American Airlines fleet has landed.

N400AN, American’s first Airbus A321neo, touched down at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) shortly before noon Feb. 1. After clearing customs, the plane will head to American’s Base Maintenance facility at PIT, where it will spend a couple of weeks undergoing the usual extensive acceptance checks conducted whenever the airline adds a new aircraft type to its fleet. The Tech Ops – PIT team will install ViaSat satellite Wi-Fi, conduct general ops checks and add interior and exterior placards as they customize the aircraft for American. After that, it will visit other American bases before entering service.

The A321neo is scheduled to begin flying customers April 2 between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) in Arizona and Orlando International Airport (MCO) in Florida. Once the company takes more deliveries, additional routes will include PHX–Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) in Alaska over the summer, and PHX and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Hawaii later this year as the A321neo begins to replace retiring Boeing 757s. The A321 is already a versatile aircraft, and the A321neo (which stands for “new engine option”) adds about 400 nautical miles in range thanks to improved fuel burn from the new engines, putting additional destinations within reach.

American has ordered 100 of these jets with deliveries running over the next several years. They seat 196 customers and, in addition to the fast Wi-Fi, include power at every seat and free wireless entertainment to each customer’s own device including free live television. Additionally, American is the launch customer for Airbus’ new XL overhead bins which significantly increase capacity. The A321neo is American’s first aircraft delivered with these bins and the company will begin retrofitting existing A321s with this same bin later this year.

American is taking the “Cabin Flex,” or “NX,” option of the A321neo, which has a new door configuration. The A321neo is part of the order for 460 aircraft placed by American in 2011, which also included 100 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The aircraft from that order have transformed American’s fleet into the youngest among U.S. network airlines.

SpaceX to Build Its Massive Interplanetary Rocket in LA

SpaceX will go through California on its way to Mars as the Big Falcon Rocket, the company’s vehicle for deep-space exploration, will be built in Los Angeles.

Late Monday, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said in his State of the City address that the rocket that SpaceX and Tesla (TSLA) Founder Elon Musk wants to use to get to humans to Mars, would be built in the Port of L.A., confirming speculation after SpaceX started preliminary lease negotiations with the port in March.

Phoenix legal defeat prompts FAA to address noise concerns

PHOENIX (AP) — Nearly 100 people strolled through the high school cafeteria throughout the evening, studying colored graphs of flight takeoffs and jotting down comments for officials.

More than three years after they awoke to find window-rattling flights rerouted in an airborne highway above their homes, residents of Phoenix’s downtown historic districts said they finally felt the Federal Aviation Administration was listening.

Cape Air service from Boston Logan Airport

Spotting Cape Air at Boston Logan Airport (from July 27, 2015). As my wife and I waited to catch our first ever Jetblue flight in Boston a few weeks ago, we came across the gate space for commuter airline Cape Air. Since it was very late on a Sunday, there were some planes parked just outside the windows of the gate. The airline was started in 1988 by pilots Craig Stewart and Dan Wolf, and financier Grant Wilson fling between Provincetown and Boston. The airline expanded in the early 90’s with new routes across southeastern New England. Cape Air and Nantucket Airlines merged In 1994, offering hourly flights between Nantucket and Hyannis. The airline also operates commuter flights for United Airlines, American Airlines, and JetBlue. The airline also operates special painted “Art In Flight” Cessna 402 aircraft paying homage to the regions and communities they serve with “A Whale Of A Plane”, “Fantasy Flyer”, “Where It All Began”, and “Green Machine”.

Cape Air from Boston Harbor to Manhattan?

June 14, 2016. Getting quickly to Manhattan from downtown Boston can be tough task for the business traveler. No matter if you drive, fly commercial from Logan, or take the Amtrak train, the commute will most likely take you more than three hours. A faster solution may be on the horizon, however. Following two years of preparations, both Cape Air and Tailwind are testing seaplane flights using a nine passenger Cessna Caravan. The plan is to use the Boston Harbor for takeoff and landing. If FAA approval is received, the two companies could launch service by the end of the year. The two competing airlines both claim that the demand is there for the new service. In order for the FAA to make an educated decision, they must coordinate with both city officials and the local Coast Guard. Fares for the seaplane service are expected to run around $1,000 for a round trip ticket.
