Norwegian Air Deal For Potential $1 bln Cash Infusion

Oct 25 (Reuters) – Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA is closing in on a deal to provide a potential $1 billion cash infusion to help it navigate increasing fuel prices and the slow winter period, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The company said it is in “advanced discussions” with an unnamed partner to create a fleet joint venture that would take over cash obligations on its large aircraft order book, according to reports.

The potential deal will include an initial 8 billion Norwegian krone injection to help the Oslo-based carrier cover for payments it has made for Boeing Co and Airbus SE aircraft, Bloomberg reported.

Norwegian Air declined to comment.

United Airlines Adding To Boeing 787 Order Book

United Airlines placed an order today for an additional nine Boeing 787-9 aircraft worth an estimated $1.3 billion, with deliveries starting in 2020. The deal raises Boeing’s total 787 order book for 2018 to 105 aircraft, surpassing the 94 orders it received for all of 2017. United also announced that it will add the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on its routes between Newark and both Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The airline already operates a fleet of 25 of the 787-9, and 12 of the smaller 787-8. United now has a total of 13 Boeing 787-9’s on order, in addition to 14 of the larger 787-10 dreamliners.

United also stated today that Dreamliner aircraft operating the routes between San Francisco and Los Angeles to Newark will include United Polaris business-class and Premium Plus seats, but will not include access to the airline’s high-end Polaris Club lounges available at select United Airlines airports.

FedEx Announces Order for 24 Medium and Large Freighters

Boeing and FedEx Express today announced a new order for 12 767 Freighters and 12 777 Freighters as the world’s largest air cargo carrier continues to invest in the industry’s most capable freighters to better serve its customers.

“We are taking another positive step in our fleet modernization program as we add more efficient, lower emission aircraft to our global fleet,” said David L. Cunningham, President and CEO of FedEx Express. “The Boeing 767 and 777 Freighters have brought greater efficiency and reliability to our air operations. The 777, with its tremendous range characteristics, has allowed us to provide faster transit times around the globe. We are excited to add more of these aircraft to our fleet.”

The new airplanes, valued at $6.6 billion at list prices, will appear on Boeing’s Orders and Deliveries webpage once contingencies have been met.

This order comes as the air cargo industry continues to gather strength. A year after demand grew by nearly 10 percent, global air freight is on track to increase by another four to five percent in 2018.

Air cargo carriers are adding capacity to keep up with demand, either by converting passenger airplanes into freighters or ordering new production cargo jets. With the latest order from FedEx Express, Boeing has sold more than 50 widebody freighters in 2018.

“We are honored that FedEx has again placed its trust on the wings of the Boeing 767 and 777. This repeat order is a big vote of confidence in Boeing’s market-leading freighter family and the long-term outlook for air freight,” said Kevin McAllister, president and chief executive officer, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

FedEx Express and Boeing have a long-standing partnership. The express carrier is a major operator of the Boeing 757 Freighter and the largest operator of the 767 Freighter and 777 Freighter. FedEx is also a customer of Boeing’s Global Services business.

American Airlines Splits New Regional Jet Order

American Airlines Group has split a $1.4 billion order for regional jets from Bombardier and Embraer to further update its fleet of short-range aircraft. The world’s largest carrier announced its plan to buy 15 Bombardier CRJ900 and 15 Embraer E-175 jets. American included options for up to 15 additional airplanes from each company.

The new order shows American’s commitment to larger regional aircraft that are able to accomodate the two passenger classes that are present on the airline’s larger single-aisle planes. The Bombardier CRJ900’s will be operated by the regional affiliate PSA Airlines, while the Embraer E-175’s will operate under the Envoy Air umbrella, according to the airline. Deliveries from both manufacturer’s are slated to begin next year.

Missing from the Bombardier piece of the order is it’s latest CSeries jets. The CSeries has struggled the last couple of years. Airbus announced in October of 2017 that it would acquire a 50.01% majority stake in the aircraft program. The view was that orders for the CSeries would surge once the might of Airbus was behind the aircraft. However, after receiving just 12 new orders total for the aircraft in 2017, no additional sales have been announced since.
