American Airlines Splits New Regional Jet Order

American Airlines Group has split a $1.4 billion order for regional jets from Bombardier and Embraer to further update its fleet of short-range aircraft. The world’s largest carrier announced its plan to buy 15 Bombardier CRJ900 and 15 Embraer E-175 jets. American included options for up to 15 additional airplanes from each company.

The new order shows American’s commitment to larger regional aircraft that are able to accomodate the two passenger classes that are present on the airline’s larger single-aisle planes. The Bombardier CRJ900’s will be operated by the regional affiliate PSA Airlines, while the Embraer E-175’s will operate under the Envoy Air umbrella, according to the airline. Deliveries from both manufacturer’s are slated to begin next year.

Missing from the Bombardier piece of the order is it’s latest CSeries jets. The CSeries has struggled the last couple of years. Airbus announced in October of 2017 that it would acquire a 50.01% majority stake in the aircraft program. The view was that orders for the CSeries would surge once the might of Airbus was behind the aircraft. However, after receiving just 12 new orders total for the aircraft in 2017, no additional sales have been announced since.

Widerøe Receives World’s First Embraer E190-E2 Jet

SAO JOSE DOS CAMPOS, Brazil, April 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Embraer and Widerøe, Scandinavia’s largest regional airline, celebrated the delivery of the manufacturer’s first production E190-E2 today at a ceremony at Embraer’s facility in São José dos Campos. The Norwegian airline will start flying the new aircraft on domestic routes later this month.

The E190-E2 is the first of three new-generation aircraft seating from 80 to 146-seat E-Jets to be introduced through 2021. Widerøe’s E190-E2 is configured with 114 seats in a single-class layout. Widerøe has contracted for up to 15 E-Jets E2s – three firm E190-E2 orders and purchase rights for an additional 12 E2s. The total value of the order is approximately USD 873 million if all rights are exercised.

Southwest Airlines adds Louisiana One logo jet

Southwest Airlines has added the Louisiana One logo jet to its fleet to celebrate 39 years of service to New Orleans. The jet wears an artist’s rendering of the Louisiana State flag, and was rolled out earlier this month on march 7th. The aircraft was unveiled at a special event at the New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport.

Southwest started flights to New Orleans in 1979, and was the airline’s first destination outside of its home state of Texas. The Mardi Gras styled celebration event at the airport included musicians, state and local government officials, community members, and Southwest Airlines employees. Southwest now operates more than 50 daily nonstop flights to 21 destinations from New Orleans.

The Louisiana One is part of a 12 state logo jet fleet of boeing 737’s in the Southwest fleet. It joins the Arizona One, California One, Colorado One, Florida One, Illinois One, Lone Star State One (Texas), Maryland One, Missouri One, Nevada One, New Mexico One and Tennessee One.

Hong Kong Express expects six-month A320neo delivery delay

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Hong Kong Express Airways Ltd expects at least a six-month delay in deliveries of new Airbus SE (AIR.SE) A320neo jets due to issues with engines made by Pratt & Whitney, according to an internal memo issued by the airline.

The budget carrier has grounded one plane in Hong Kong until May due to a lack of spare engines after the jet made a mid-air turn-back due to engine issues last month, said a person with knowledge of the matter who was not authorized to speak publicly and so declined to be identified.

Another one of its five A320neos remains on the ground at the Airbus final assembly line site in Hamburg and has yet to be delivered to Hong Kong because one of its engines needs a fix, according to a memo to pilots seen by Reuters on Thursday.

The U.S. aviation regulator on Wednesday said the engines from Pratt & Whitney – a unit of United Technologies Corp (UTX.N) – posed a potential shutdown risk, in a formal warning that followed similar action by European regulators on Feb. 9.

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, owned by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd (INGL.NS), said on Feb. 10 it had grounded three jets due to issues with Pratt & Whitney engines.

Pratt & Whitney’s priority is to obtain replacement engines for all of the affected jets globally, said the Hong Kong Express memo, the contents of which were first reported by the South China Morning Post earlier on Thursday.

The memo said that could take months, while new A320neos on the production line could be delayed for “six months or more”.

Because replacement engines will need testing, Hong Kong Express is “seriously considering” not introducing any new A320neos into its fleet until next year at the earliest, the memo said.

Representatives of Hong Kong Express – part-owned by HNA Group Co Ltd – were not immediately available for comment. The South China Morning Post reported that Hong Kong Express said the memo had been issued to provide relevant details about the fleet and operations to its cockpit crew.

Airbus on Thursday said it was assessing the impact the engine issue would have on 2018 deliveries.

Pratt & Whitney did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The engine maker on Monday said it would discuss the potential affect of the problem on 2018 engine production after regulators respond to its proposed fix. (Story by Jamie Freed)
