Norwegian 787 Dreamliner fleet expanding, will add Las Vegas

Norwegian 787 Dreamliner fleet will be expanding, airline to add flights between Las Vegas and London Gatwick Airport. Norwegian Airlines announced yesterday that it will lease two additional new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners from CIT Aerospace. The two additional Boeing 787-9 aircraft are scheduled to be delivered in the first half of 2018. The company is currently on track to have a fleet of 42 787 aircraft by 2020. The European discount airline also announced yesterday that it will be adding service between Las Vegas and London Gatwick Airport beginning this winter. The round trip flights will be flown by a Boeing 787-9 aircraft with the service operating on Monday’s and Thursday’s.

Norwegian receives its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

Norwegian has received its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline leased the aircraft from MG Aviation, which is owned by Jordache Enterprises. The airplane is the first of 4 Dreamliners leasing company MG Aviation has on order. Norwegian will add the 787-9 to its current fleet of 8 787-8’s. The airline will use the larger -9 aircraft to expand its routes across North America, South America, and Asia. The airline currently fly’s to over 130 destinations across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the US. The airline operates an all Boeing fleet, with 90 737-800’s, 8 787-8’s, and 1 787-9. The airline has ordering 19 787-9’s with a list price of over $5 billion. Airlines routinely negotiate for a substantial discount on their orders.

The Swedish actress Greta Garbo is gracing the tail of Norwegian’s first 787-9. The airline is known for its white and red livery that sports portraits of famous Scandinavians on their aircraft tails. Norwegian Air Shuttle reportedly is considering spinning off its aircraft leasing unit. The news comes as newer jets begin arriving from Boeing and Airbus. The European discount air carrier currently has orders for 100 Airbus A320neo and 100 Boeing 737 Max aircraft. It is planning to lease at least some, if not all, of the new Airbus airplanes it receives. The company has stated that it does not want to retain 100% ownership of its leasing business, and is considering all of its options, including a public spin off. Norwegian Air Shuttle currently operates the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on its international routes, and is planning on expanding this capacity 40% this calendar year over 2015. Norwegian plans to start flying from Paris to Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, and New York this July.

Norwegian Airlines selects Rolls-Royce

Norwegian Airlines has picked the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine to power the 19 Boeing 787-9 aircraft it ordered back in October, 2015. Rolls-Royce has declared the value of the engine order at $2.7 billion, including the TotalCare service support included in the order. Norwegian Airlines also has options for an additional 10 787-9 aircraft, and the airline has confirmed that they would also be powered by Trent 1000 engines, if ordered.
