Alaska Airlines Adds Flights at JFK Airport

On Wednesday, two years to the day after announcing that it would acquire Virgin America, Alaska Air (NYSE: ALK) rolled out some more changes to the route network it inherited from Virgin.

As part of the Virgin America deal, Alaska Air acquired 23 slots at New York’s JFK Airport. (Each slot allows one takeoff or one landing at a specified time between 6 a.m. and 10:59 p.m.) Virgin America used nearly all of these slots to operate flights to its main bases of San Francisco and Los Angeles. By contrast, Alaska Airlines plans to redeploy some of these slots to enable more flights to other West Coast cities where it has a strong presence — and where it faces less competition.

JetBlue Has a Plan for Beating Alaska Air

Two years ago, JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU) tried to buy trendy West Coast rival Virgin America. However, it ultimately lost a bidding war to Alaska Air (NYSE: ALK), which was eager to expand its strong position in the Pacific Northwest to the rest of the West Coast.

JetBlue responded with an aggressive plan to gain market share on transcontinental routes. The linchpin of this strategy was the expansion of Mint, JetBlue’s highly acclaimed premium service, to a slew of new routes. So far, this strategy has been extremely successful, and it is putting a ton of pressure on Alaska Air in the transcontinental market.

Warren Buffett Speaks, Airline Stocks Soar

Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A) (NYSE: BRK-B) released its annual report on Saturday, including Warren Buffet’s highly anticipated shareholder letter. In this year’s letter, Buffett noted that Berkshire Hathaway ended 2017 with a whopping $116 billion of cash and short-term investments.

Buffett would like to redeploy this cash into productive investments. Nevertheless, Berkshire Hathaway made just one significant acquisition last year, as a buoyant stock market and the availability of cheap debt caused companies’ asking prices to soar past what Buffett was willing to pay.

Cape Air service from Boston Logan Airport

Spotting Cape Air at Boston Logan Airport (from July 27, 2015). As my wife and I waited to catch our first ever Jetblue flight in Boston a few weeks ago, we came across the gate space for commuter airline Cape Air. Since it was very late on a Sunday, there were some planes parked just outside the windows of the gate. The airline was started in 1988 by pilots Craig Stewart and Dan Wolf, and financier Grant Wilson fling between Provincetown and Boston. The airline expanded in the early 90’s with new routes across southeastern New England. Cape Air and Nantucket Airlines merged In 1994, offering hourly flights between Nantucket and Hyannis. The airline also operates commuter flights for United Airlines, American Airlines, and JetBlue. The airline also operates special painted “Art In Flight” Cessna 402 aircraft paying homage to the regions and communities they serve with “A Whale Of A Plane”, “Fantasy Flyer”, “Where It All Began”, and “Green Machine”.

Cape Air from Boston Harbor to Manhattan?

June 14, 2016. Getting quickly to Manhattan from downtown Boston can be tough task for the business traveler. No matter if you drive, fly commercial from Logan, or take the Amtrak train, the commute will most likely take you more than three hours. A faster solution may be on the horizon, however. Following two years of preparations, both Cape Air and Tailwind are testing seaplane flights using a nine passenger Cessna Caravan. The plan is to use the Boston Harbor for takeoff and landing. If FAA approval is received, the two companies could launch service by the end of the year. The two competing airlines both claim that the demand is there for the new service. In order for the FAA to make an educated decision, they must coordinate with both city officials and the local Coast Guard. Fares for the seaplane service are expected to run around $1,000 for a round trip ticket. Virgin America puts itself up for sale

Virgin America has reportedly put the airline up for sale. News first broke that the airline was shopping for bidders last week. It is rumored that Virgin America investors are ready to cash in now that airline stocks are trading at elevated levels. The time may be right for those investors to get out, as the airline has struggled with intense compitition and low fares on the routes that it serves. Virgin America has been an easy target for its competitors to engage in these battles, as the air carriers small size means there are fewer routes for them to compete on. The recent additions of Honolulu and Kahului in Hawaii only brings the airlines total up to 24 airports in the US and Mexico. The decision by the airline to move its base of operations in Dallas from DFW to Love Field was also viewed as a very poor idea. The airline is being squeezed at Love Field by gate space capacity, with only two available for their use. Southwest Airlines’ Bags Fly Free and no cost ticket change or cancellation policies has made it even tougher to compete there. American Airlines was a competitor that Virgin was far better matched up against from a fare and service standpoint.

Virgin America bidders

Alaska Airline and JetBlue are said to have already made offers for Virgin America. A merger with JetBlue is believed by the street to be the best match. Its hubs in the East include Boston, Fort Lauderdale, New York (JFK), and San Juan Puerto Rico. The only JetBlue hub in the West is based in Long Beach, California. Virgin America has 2 hubs in the West, at San Francisco (SFO) and Los Angeles (LAX). JetBlue also operates the same types of Airbus aircraft as Virgin America, improving crew and maintenance synergies. The two carriers also offer a higher quality of passenger service, with both ranking high in consumer satisfaction polls. The fit with Alaska Airlines is viewed as having less benefit from a route overlap view. However, with both carrier networks primarily based on the west coast, a merger between the two could help Alaska Airlines reduce seat capacity and improve ticket prices. Alaska Airlines has been under pressure from Delta Air Lines, which has been aggressively expanding in Seattle where Alaska is based at. Other airlines may still decide to place a bid as well, so it looks like time will tell what happens with Virgin America.

JetBlue expanding operations from Long Beach Airport

JetBlue expanding its operations from Long Beach Airport in California. The airline will be increasing the number of destinations and flights from its Long Beach Airport hub, which serves as the airlines focus city in southern California. JetBlue’s growth comes on the heals of the announcement of three new slots recent award to the air carrier at Long Beach. JetBlue will also increase its utilization of existing slots at the airport, increasing the number of nonstop cities served by one to twelve.

JetBlue expanding to Reno, Nevada

JetBlue will begin a new nonstop route from Long Beach to the northern Nevada city of Reno on the 15th of August with one daily flight. The flight will depart Long Beach at 12:15pm and arrive in Reno at 1:30pm operating as flight 42. The return service back will depart Reno at 2:15 pm and arrive back in southern California at 3:40 pm. As far as the increase in flight frequencies goes, JetBlue will adding daily flights on several of its current routes to meet increased customer demand. These increased frequencies include more flights to the Bay Area. The airline will add one extra daily flight to San Francisco International Airport beginning on the 15th of August, and an additional flight to Oakland International Airport beginning on the 16th of August. This will give JetBlue four daily roundtrips to both airports. The airline will also add another daily flight to Las Vegas McCarran International Airport beginning on the 15th of August. The new flights will be operated by additional Airbus A320 aircraft.
