New York Skinny Tower Passes Supertall Height

Construction images reveal that the world’s skinniest skyscraper, 111 West 57th by SHoP Architects, has gained supertall status. Photos taken by Andrew Campbell Nelson show the residential tower as construction completes on its third setback – one of a series designed by New York firm SHoP to gradually narrow the already svelte structure towards the top. The milestone means that 111 West 57th has surpassed a height of 984 feet (300 metres) – the requirement for a supertall design.

Post Malone On Plane Attempting Emergency Landing

A Gulfstream IV that is reportedly carrying the rapper Post Malone, has been circling the greater New York City-area for nearly four hours to attempt to make an emergency landing. The aircraft reported the emergency after blowing out two tires during its takeoff on Tuesday morning. TMZ reports that the famed rapper is on board the aircraft after spending Monday night at the MTV Video Music Awards, where he won an award for song of the year for his hit song “Rockstar.”

The jet is believed to be carrying 16 people, and departed around 11 a.m. from Teterboro Airport in New jersey, just outside of New York City. The pilot reported a problem following its take-off from runway 24 at Teterboro. The aircraft was enroute to London’s Luton Airport.

The pilot initially was going to attempt the emergency landing back at Teterboro, before the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the airport, re-routed the aircraft to Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport in Massachusetts. The FAA later reported that the plane has now been diverted to Stewart Airport, just north of New York City.

The aircraft has been circling to try and burn off most of its 3,700 gallons of fuel before attempting the emergency landing.

JetBlue Adds Mint Service South of the Border

JetBlue has announced that it will begin seasonal service to Latin America this fall with the addition of flights between New York (JFK) and Costa Rica (LIR), and between Boston (BOS) and St. Lucia (UVF) and St. Maarten (SXM).

“Adding Mint between these cities means travelers on these routes can finally enjoy a first-class flying experience,” said Marty St. George, the executive vice president for commercial and planning at JetBlue.

Mint service brings a number of features into the fold on traditional flights with lie-flat seats, signature cocktails, amenity kits, and a special tapas menu has made Mint service a big hint among the traveling public looking for an upgraded experience. Jetblue introduced its Mint service back in 2014.

Singapore Airlines To Launch World’s Longest Flight

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Singapore Airlines Ltd said it would launch the world’s longest commercial flight in October, a near-19 hour non-stop journey from Singapore to the New York area.

The 8,277 nautical mile (15,329 kilometre) flight from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey with 161 business class and premium economy seats will eclipse the 7,843 nautical mile Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Auckland as the world’s longest, according to airline data provider OAG.

Airlines including Singapore Airlines, Australia’s Qantas Airways Ltd and U.S.-based United Continental Holdings Inc are adding ultra-long haul flights that can capture an airfare premium of around 20 percent versus flights involving one or more stops.

The Singapore-Newark flight marks the return of a popular route for Singapore Airlines. The carrier had flown the marathon flights until 2013, when high fuel prices made the use of four-engine Airbus SE A340-500 jets uneconomic. It has since flown to New York’s JFK Airport via Frankfurt.

Singapore Airlines is Airbus’ first and to date only customer for the A350-900ULR, an ultra-long range version of the fuel-efficient twin-engine A350 jet.

Qantas has said it is considering the purchase of the A350-900ULR or Boeing Co’s 777X to allow it to fly non-stop from Sydney to London from 2022, an even longer 9,200 nautical mile journey.

Singapore Airlines said on Wednesday that it also plans to introduce non-stop flights from Singapore to Los Angeles with the A350-900ULR at a later date.

The airline expects to receive its first A350-900ULR in September, with all seven on order due by the end of the year.

Alaska Airlines Adds Flights at JFK Airport

On Wednesday, two years to the day after announcing that it would acquire Virgin America, Alaska Air (NYSE: ALK) rolled out some more changes to the route network it inherited from Virgin.

As part of the Virgin America deal, Alaska Air acquired 23 slots at New York’s JFK Airport. (Each slot allows one takeoff or one landing at a specified time between 6 a.m. and 10:59 p.m.) Virgin America used nearly all of these slots to operate flights to its main bases of San Francisco and Los Angeles. By contrast, Alaska Airlines plans to redeploy some of these slots to enable more flights to other West Coast cities where it has a strong presence — and where it faces less competition.

La Compagnie Places Order For 2 Airbus A321-NEO Aircraft

La Compagnie, an all business class airline flying between New York (Newark International) and Paris (Charles de Gaulle), announced an order for 2 new Airbus A321-NEO aircraft last month. The boutique air carrier placed the order three years after launching as an exclusively business-class airline on the 4th of July in 2014, and one year after adding a second daily flight between New York and Paris. The airline currently uses a fleet of two Boeing 757 aircraft that are outfitted with 74 lie-flat seats.

La Compagnie, French for “The Company”, is accelerating its development with the order of the two Airbus A321-NEO aircraft. The investment marks a major milestone for the still-young airline, revealing its plan for stable growth and future route expansion. Due for delivery in 2019, the new modern, efficient and eco-friendly A321-NEO aircraft will take La Compagnie’s in-flight business-class experience to a new level. The planes will be equipped with the latest in technology, Wi-Fi, and full lie-flat beds. This should allow its passengers to be well-connected and well-rested upon arrival in New York or Paris.

The airline joined forces with XL Airways in 2016, and has progressively focused on optimizing its performance across all fronts. The choice of the French aeronautical firm Airbus strengthens La Compagnie’s French spirit and philosophy that has made the carrier desirable for intercontinental passengers. The airline has always been an advocate for the French business community, and with the selection of Airbus and the A321-NEO, they are able to illuminate their French touch and travel experience.
