Canadian Pacific Railway Sees Record-Setting 2019

TORONTO/BANGALORE, Jan 23 (Reuters) – Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd expects double-digit earnings growth in 2019, the country’s second-biggest rail operator said on Wednesday, lifted by strong pricing and growing demand for shipments of crude and other commodities.

The Calgary-based company, which got a sizeable revenue lift from crude in its fourth quarter, said it expects crude shipments will increase to an annual run rate of approximately 120,000 rail cars in the second quarter from about 100,000 currently.

Reporting a bigger-than-expected profit, despite higher fuel costs, CP also forecast double-digit growth in diluted earnings per share in 2019, from C$14.51 in 2018, and mid-single-digit volume growth.

“The two most striking things were they did well on the pricing …and they did just a fantastic job of keeping their costs in line,” said Edward Jones analyst Dan Sherman. “It sounds like they just see pretty solid sailing going forward.”

CP’s operating ratio, a closely watched productivity metric that measures operating expenses as a percentage of revenue, improved by 370 basis points to 56.5 percent in the fourth quarter.

While railways are sensitive to economic downturns or major shifts in trade, CP said it has not seen a downturn in its international intermodal container business in January or February, despite a surge of volume late in the fourth quarter.

“We entered 2019 with tremendous momentum,” said Chief Executive Keith Creel on a conference call with analysts. “Rest assured, we’re poised for another record-setting year.”

CP said it recently struck a multi-year agreement with Suncor Energy that is a C$20 million near-term opportunity that could double in later years. It also struck a multi-year deal to ship refined fuels to Southern Ontario, but did not disclose the customer.

Growing crude shipments come as output from Western Canada has outstripped pipeline capacity, prompting producers to increasingly sign transport deals with CP and its larger rival, Canadian National Railway Co.

Cenovus Energy Inc said in September it had signed three-year deals with CP and CN to transport roughly 100,000 barrels per day of crude from Northern Alberta to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

For the quarter ended Dec. 31, CP reported earnings of C$ 4.55 per share, excluding items, beating the C$4.22 consensus estimate, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Net income fell 45 percent, to C$545 million, compared to year-ago results buoyed by a C$527 million income-tax gain.

Revenue rose 17 percent to C$2.01 billion.

Union Pacific Profit Beats Estimates

(Reuters) – Union Pacific Corp (UNP.N), one of the biggest U.S. railroads, on Thursday reported higher-than-expected quarterly profit and said efficiency gains will bolster profits in 2019.

Shares in the company, which connects 23 states in the western two-thirds of the United States by rail, rose 3.3 percent to $159.37.

Its operating ratio – a measure of operating expenses as a percentage of revenue and a key metric for Wall Street – improved 1.1 points to 61.6 percent in the fourth quarter from the same period last year, the company said.

A lower ratio means more efficiency and higher profitability.

“We expect (2019) operating margins will increase as a result of solid core pricing gains and significant productivity benefits,” Chief Executive Lance Fritz said in a statement.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based company this month hired former Canadian National Railway Co (CNR.TO) executive and turnaround expert Jim Vena as its chief operating officer and said its operating ratio would fall below 60 percent by 2020.

Vena worked with Hunter Harrison, who led the revival of two Canadian railroads and died in 2017 after a short stint as CEO of CSX Corp (CSX.O), which recently set a 2019 target for a sub-60 percent operating ratio.

Union Pacific is cutting jobs, consolidating businesses and selling a corporate retreat to drive costs lower.

On a conference call on Thursday, Vena said “everything is on the table” as Union Pacific looks for further efficiency gains.

“I know the railroad has a vision in place to get to a 55 operating ratio already, and we’ll be working aggressively towards that goal,” Vena said.

Net income fell to $1.55 billion, or $2.12 per share in the fourth quarter, from $7.28 billion, or $9.25 per share, a year earlier when the company received a boost from changes in U.S. tax laws.

Freight revenue in the quarter rose 6 percent, lifting total operating revenue to $5.76 billion from $5.45 billion. Net core pricing was up 2.5 percent from the year-ago quarter.

Analysts, on average, expected a profit of $2.06 per share and revenue of $5.74 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Terminal dwell, the amount of time rail cars sit idle in a terminal, was 26.7 hours for the quarter, an 18 percent improvement versus a year ago.

Union Pacific and Berkshire Hathaway-owned (BRKa.N) BNSF are the largest U.S. freight rail operators with annual revenue of more than $20 billion each.

San Francisco Railway Cable Car in the Friday Pic of the Week

San Francisco Railway Powell & Hyde Cable Car is the Friday Pic of the Week. Cable cars were invented in San Francisco in 1873, and would go on to become an icon of the city. The Powell & Hyde line runs uphill from a terminal at Powell and Market Streets to the north, before crossing over the California Street line at the top of the hill. The route then turns to the left and continues uphill along Jackson Street, while the cable cars operating in the opposite direction travel down Washington Street. The route then turns right and procedes downhill on Hyde Street to the Hyde & Beach terminal at the waterfront. This line was constructed using parts of the old O’Farrell, Jones & Hyde and Washington & Jackson lines, which had been taken out of service in May of 1954.
