Should Berkshire Hathaway buy Southwest Airlines?

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK.B) could use its controversial cash hoard to purchase Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV), according to Morgan Stanley.

In a research note, reported on by CNBC and MarketWatch, analysts at the bank noted that Berkshire now has a thing for airline stocks, over a decade after Buffett dismissed them as “the worst sort” of businesses. Within the sector, Morgan Stanley identified Southwest Airlines as the best fit, adding that the Dallas, Texas-based low-cost carrier’s “consistent earnings power,” strong balance sheet, good management, “simple” business model, low cost structure, “significant competitive advantage” and attractive price are exactly the type of characteristics that Berkshire usually looks for.

Hawaiian Airlines’ Fleet Transition Back On Track

Five years ago, Hawaiian Holdings (NASDAQ: HA) ordered 16 medium-range Airbus(NASDAQOTH: EADSY) A321neos. It later agreed to lease two more A321neos, with all 18 aircraft scheduled for delivery between 2017 and 2020.

Hawaiian Airlines received its first two A321neos from Airbus in late 2017. Entering 2018, the carrier expected to have eight A321neos by the middle of the year, allowing it to replace its aging Boeing 767s and increase service during the summer peak season. However, a new round of production miscues at engine supplier Pratt & Whitney delayed this year’s deliveries.

Hawaiian Airlines Cuts Q2 Guidance

At an industry conference last week, Hawaiian Holdings (NASDAQ: HA) CEO Peter Ingram told reporters that Hawaiian Airlines had experienced a modest decline in bookings due to the continued eruption of Kilauea: a volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii.

This week, Hawaiian Airlines gave investors a better sense of the damage. The carrier slashed its second quarter unit revenue guidance, which will pinch its profits — particularly because fuel prices have risen since the beginning of the quarter. However, there’s no real reason for long-term investors to worry. In fact, if Hawaiian Holdings stock continues to decline because of the guidance reduction, it could represent a nice buying opportunity.

Boeing 747’s Are Back From The Dead

A funny thing happened to an older generation of Boeing Co. 747 jumbo jets on their way to dusty oblivion in desert parking lots.

Instead of being scrapped, the humpbacked planes are back in demand as workhorses of global shipping. Booming trade is stoking the need for big, long-range jets to haul time-sensitive goods, from Apple Inc. iPhones made in China to fresh flowers grown in Latin America.

SpiceJet looks to add commuter routes in India

Indian carrier SpiceJet is looking to add commuter routes to the more remote parts of the country. The ability to provide these essential air services are hampered by the lack of infrastructure and existing airfields available. The airline has been working with Setouchi Holdings of Japan on test runs of seaplane operations at Mumbai’s Girgaum Chowpatty beach, as well as land operations to Nagpur and Guwahati.

SpiceJet is India’s third largest airline by passengers carried. Operating a fleet of newer Boeing 737 and Bombardier Q-400 aircraft has helped the airline to maintain its low-cost structure. The company currently operates 306 daily flights to 35 local and 6 international destinations, and operates hubs in Delhi and Hyderabad. In March of 2014, the airline signed a firm order for 42 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. This has been followed by orders for an additional 113 of the 737 Max 8’s. SpiceJet also signed a letter of intent at the 2017 Paris Air Show with Bombardier to purchase up to 50 Q400 aircraft to support growth in its feeder connectivity.

The feeder route network is where the partnership with Setouchi Holdings comes into focus. Setouchi Holdings owns Quest Aircraft, which manufacturers the Kodiak small commuter aircraft that can operate both on unimproved airfields, and as an amphibious aircraft fixed with pontoons. Quest Aircraft Company is located in Sandpoint, Idaho, and was purchased by the Japanese Holding Company in February of 2015.
