Air New Zealand Receives 1,600th ATR Aircraft Delivery

Toulouse, France – In the same month as it celebrated its 40 year anniversary, ATR has reached another impressive milestone in its history, delivering its 1,600th aircraft to national flag carrier, Air New Zealand (OTC: ANZLY). This delivery highlights the enduring strength of the ATR program, providing essential connectivity to communities all over the world. It also proves the value of the ATR 72-600 at serving domestic routes in New Zealand as it is the last of 29 aircraft ordered.

While ties between the two companies initially began some 25 years ago with the delivery of first generation ATR’s, this last decade has seen the forging of closer ties, with the delivery of the 29 dash 600 aircraft and through an important collaboration that enhanced the aircraft’s approach capabilities.

The introduction of the RNP AR 0.3/0.3 feature, part of ATR’s latest Standard 3 avionics suite, helped the airline and its pilots with the accuracy of the approach into Queenstown airport and providing reliable connectivity to the local community, who benefit greatly from ski tourism in the mountainous region.

Sustainability is also a key concern for both airline and manufacturer, with Air New Zealand having chosen the ATR 72-600 for its fleet as it burns 40% less fuel and emits 40% less CO2 than a similarly sized regional jet. This shared commitment to further enhancing eco-efficiency led to an agreement to work together to explore the future of the regional aviation ecosystem, including hybrid aircraft in 2018.

‘Consumers Can Fly With Confidence and Safety Today’

In a recent appearance on the “Conversations with Mike Milken” podcast, Delta CEO Ed Bastian shared with the Milken Institute founder how the global airline is providing a safe travel experience for customers and employees, while also moving toward recovery amid the worldwide pandemic.  

“In my opinion, consumers can fly with confidence and safety today,” he said. “We are taking the same measures towards the personal safety of our customers on board our planes, just as we do the flight safety of the experience.”  

Bastian continued to highlight the many steps being taken to give customers confidence when traveling, including electrostatic spraying, back-to-front boarding, capping load factors at 60 percent and requiring masks for employees and customers. 

“The reason I go through all those steps is that security and safety is in our DNA,” Bastian shared. “That’s the core of our franchise.”

Saab to Provide Mid-Life Extension for UK’s Arthur Systems

  • Saab has received an order from the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence for a mid-life extension and support for the Arthur weapon locating system. The order value is 482 million SEK, and was booked in Q4, 2019.

Arthur protects forces and civilians by providing warning of incoming fire and is also used for tasks including counterbattery missions and fire control. The mid-life extension will represent a major programme of obsolescence management by the insertion of modern technology, ensuring that this critical operational counter-fire capability can be sustained on a cost-effective basis through to its extended out-of-service date. 

“Our Arthur systems have contributed to protecting UK forces for more than 15 years. We look forward to continuing to strengthen the UK’s weapon locating capability for years to come,” says Anders Carp, Senior Vice President and Head of Saab’s business area Surveillance.

Deliveries of the mid-life extension will take place between 2022 and 2023. The support contract covers 2020-2026. Saab will carry out the work in Gothenburg, Sweden, with support also taking place at 5th Regiment Royal Artillery’s Marne Barracks in Catterick, UK. Arthur is known in the UK as the Mobile Artillery Monitoring Battlefield (MAMBA) radar.

 “MAMBA has long proven itself as a battle-winning capability, protecting civilians and troops on operations for many years. Our troops in Catterick will work alongside our counterparts at Saab to ensure this life-saving piece of equipment remains in service for the next six years”, says Jeremy Quin MP, the UK’s Minister for Defence Procurement.

The UK received the first Arthur systems from Saab in 2003, and the systems have supported operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Atlas Air Lands El Al As New Customer

El Al Israel Airlines is outsourcing operation of its main freighter route between Tel Aviv and Liege, Belgium, to Atlas Air Inc. under an extended charter arrangement.

Atlas, an aviation services company headquartered in Purchase, N.Y., said Tuesday it is leasing El Al a Boeing 747-400 all-cargo aircraft, operating it with its own crew and providing maintenance and insurance (ACMI) beginning this month. 

El Al, a new customer for Atlas, is experiencing strong growth in demand across its freight network, according to the announcement. The Israeli carrier sells the space on the plane and covers expenses such as ground handling, landing fees and fuel. 

No terms of the commercial cooperation were disclosed, but ACMI deals typically run for one to three years.

Saab Providing Digital Air Traffic Services in Scandinavia

The first new airport in Sweden in 20 years has been inaugurated, Scandinavian Mountains Airport in Sälen. Saab is providing the on-site camera tower in Sälen and digital air traffic control services from Saab’s remote tower centre in Sundsvall.

Scandinavian Mountains Airport has entrusted Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions (SDATS) to both install the system and remotely manage air traffic control from Sundsvall. 

“One of the advantages of remote air traffic control is operational flexibility, which makes it easier for us to manage varying volumes of traffic over the seasons,” says Per Ahl, CEO of Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions. “Remote air traffic control is also safe and cost-effective. We are now providing a comprehensive concept to the first airport in the world with fully digital air traffic control.”

The contract covers the installation of Saab’s remote tower system at the airport in 2018/19, as well as the provision of air traffic control from Sundsvall for a period of 10 years starting December 2019. The airport mainly serves the ski resorts in the Sälen/Trysil area during the winter season.

“Saab’s Remote Tower technology and services were the natural choice for us when we built our airport,” says Gunnar Lenman, CEO of Scandinavian Mountains Airport. “It enables us to future-proof our business and ensure cost-effective and flexible services. Furthermore, we envision the airport playing a part in large-scale digital transition for our customers.”

Commissioning of the airport will take place during the 2019/20 winter season.

ATR Delivers First Ever Green Financed Aircraft

  • First of five new 72-600 orders by Braathens Regional Airlines

ATR, world number one regional aircraft manufacturer, today delivered the first ever green financed aircraft to Swedish regional airline Braathens Regional Airlines, BRA. The aircraft is leased from Avation and is financed by Deutsche Bank. It is part of a new order for five 72-600s, all purchased by Avation from ATR and leased to BRA. Upon completion of the order in early 2020, the airline will itself operate an entirely ATR fleet, comprised of 15 ATR 72-600 aircraft.

Vigeo Eiris, one of the world’s leading independent agencies providing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) ratings, expressed the opinion that the project of replacing ageing regional jets with new ATR 72-600 aircraft is aligned with the Green Loan Principles (GLP) established by the Loan Market Association in 2018.

This first ever Green Financing of an aircraft confirms the high sustainable value of the modern ATR turboprop aircraft. The ATR 72-600 aircraft has a significant environmental advantage over regional jets and other turboprops emitting 40% less CO2. Turboprops are more efficient than jets on short sectors as they accelerate air using less power, so use less fuel.  

BRA CEO, Geir Stormorken, remarked: “We have made a commitment to decrease our environmental impact and the ATR is an essential part of our strategy. With that as a goal, it simply makes sense to choose the most efficient aircraft. By replacing parts of our existing fleet of regional jets with ATR 72-600 aircraft we will emit 7,500 fewer tonnes of CO2 per aircraft, per year. We believe that aviation is an essential part of Sweden’s regional transport network and we look forward to showing our passengers and the Swedish public at large that there is a sustainable way of flying.”
