The European discount airline finally has gained a\u00a0tentative approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation yesterday. The approval for the Ireland based subsidiary\u00a0of\u00a0Norwegian Air has been a long fight.\u00a0The application has been bombarded by\u00a0multiple objections from other U.S. based airlines and their unions.\u00a0The regulatory agency felt it could no longer delay the approval though, as the discount\u00a0carrier has\u00a0met all the DOT&#8217;s standards for its permit\u00a0to be issued.\u00a0The department\u00a0stated that it did consult with the \u00a0Department of Justice and State Department before it issued the ruling.\u00a0Norwegian Air Group CEO Bjorn Kjos released\u00a0a statement that\u00a0&#8220;A final approval, based on the Open Skies Agreement between the U.S. and E.U. will be a\u00a0win for consumers and the economies on both sides of the Atlantic.&#8221; Norwegian Air Shuttle had\u00a0complained about the continued delays in the process before the DOT issues Norwegian Air tentative OK.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">DOT issues Norwegian Air tentative OK despite union objections<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The delay in the approval from the U.S. was mainly due to the objections of rival airlines and their\u00a0unions. They claimed that the plan by Norwegian Air to setup\u00a0a\u00a0subsidiary in Ireland was a thinly veiled plan\u00a0to evade the\u00a0wage and work standard laws for pilots and cabin crews in its home base of\u00a0Norway. The\u00a0Air Line Pilots Association has claimed that the Norwegian\u00a0subsidiary is\u00a0planning to hire pilots and crew through a Singapore based company. The Air Line Pilots Association is the\u00a0largest pilot union in the U.S. The European based discount carrier has stated that it plans to hire\u00a0hundreds of U.S. based crew members.\u00a0The DOT has stated that\u00a0the issues brought up by the U.S. based labor groups\u00a0warranted them proceeding with caution.
