{"id":1046,"date":"2016-04-21T03:15:08","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T08:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/planesintheair.com\/?p=1046"},"modified":"2016-04-21T03:15:08","modified_gmt":"2016-04-21T08:15:08","slug":"lyft-and-uber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/?p=1046","title":{"rendered":"Lyft and Uber in Austin vs the cab companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" xml:lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Lyft and Uber in Austin<\/strong> have been picking up passengers at the Bergstrom International Airport for the last 18 months.\u00a0The ride sharing\u00a0services began at the airport following the passing of an ordinance by the Austin City Council\u00a0in October, 2014. The ordinance that allowed Lyft and Uber to operate airport service\u00a0called for the\u00a0companies to provide a fee to the city to cover the costs of monitoring the\u00a0ride\u00a0sharing services. The\u00a0ordinance specified that the fee would be calculated by a separate ordinance.\u00a0The City\u00a0Council then\u00a0convened its\u00a02014 sessions without legislating the\u00a0fee ordinance. Since that time, Austin&#8217;s 3 cab companies have been paying a fee of $450 each for\u00a0their 900 airport cab permits. The City Council passed\u00a0a new ride\u00a0sharing\u00a0fee proposal last December, 2015.\u00a0The result of the\u00a0new legislations\u00a0fees and requirements has been viewed as un-acceptible by Lyft and Uber. The dispute\u00a0has now boiled down to\u00a0a public vote on May 7\u00a0to decide on the ride sharing companies alternate proposal, known\u00a0as\u00a0Proposition 1.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" xml:lang=\"en-US\">Lyft and Uber in Austin face\u00a0Proposition 1 results<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new fee proposal by the City of Austin gives\u00a0the ride\u00a0sharing companies a choice of 3 ways to pay the city:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">1%\u00a0of their annual gross revenue from operations in Austin.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">A total\u00a0calculated by multiplying the city taxi permit fee by each of the\u00a0companies total number\u00a0of ride\u00a0sharing drivers.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">A fee\u00a0based on the total number of miles driven by each company in a \u00a0calendyear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new city ordinance also calls for each\u00a0company to\u00a0pay 1% of its gross Austin revenue for a\u00a0compliant driver education fund.\u00a0If the ride sharing company participates in a safety assurance program, it will not have to pay that additional fee. The new ordinance\u00a0also\u00a0requires that drivers with Lyft and Uber must under go more stringent fingerprint and background checks then the companies currently require.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The vote on Proposition 1 will decide if the legislation passed by the City Council will be replaced by those drafted by\u00a0Lyft and Uber.
