Used A380<\/strong> aircraft set to potentially flood the leasing market? Rumors in the used aircraft marketplace indicate that\u00a0Singapore Airlines may\u00a0start returning the super jumbo jets\u00a0next year. This\u00a0would be the first time the second\u00ad hand demand would be tested for the largest jetliner in the world. The aircraft are owned by the international \u00adleasing firm Doric.\u00a0Singapore Airlines has not yet officially confirmed\u00a0the aircraft\u00a0returns, but the London \u00adbased leasing firm is already making preparations.\u00a0Plans are already underway to\u00a0possibly refurbishment the giant aircraft. This includes reserving paint shop time, and securing\u00a0the availability of replacement seating.<\/p>\n

Singapore Airlines was the launch customer for the Airbus\u00a0A380, and purchased\u00a0a total of 19 jets. Only Dubai \u00adbased Emirates Airlines operates a larger fleet\u00a0of the worlds largest aircraft.\u00a0Singapore Airlines originally signed a\u00a010\u00ad year lease for the planes, which is set to expire in 2017.\u00a0Doric had originally believed\u00a0that\u00a0the air carrier would exercise its two year\u00a0option to keep the first five aircraft. Singapore Airlines still has 5\u00a0more new A380 aircraft due for delivery of the 24 total it has ordered.<\/p>\n

Airbus has had a hard time getting sales for the giant A380 aircraft the last few years. The same story holds true for updated Boeing 747-800. Many\u00a0global airlines chose to\u00a0acquired\u00a0slightly smaller, longer range\u00a0aircraft instead of the competing jumbo jets, instead. Airbus would be in a tough spot if it had\u00a0to compete against the\u00a0lower cost used aircraft.\u00a0The first A380 aircraft\u00a0was just handed over to Singapore Airlines\u00a0in 2007.\u00a0Only a total of 180 A380 airplanes have been delivered in total.\u00a0Cheaper lease pricing on\u00a0the plane\u00a0could save air carriers big bucks off the $432.6 million list price. It will be very interesting to see how the A380 market will play out.<\/p>\n
