{"id":3779,"date":"2019-02-18T07:36:25","date_gmt":"2019-02-18T13:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/planesintheair.com\/?p=3779"},"modified":"2019-02-18T07:36:31","modified_gmt":"2019-02-18T13:36:31","slug":"raytheon-wins-1-5-bln-uae-air-force-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/?p=3779","title":{"rendered":"Raytheon Wins $1.5 bln UAE Air Force Contract"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ABU\n DHABI, Feb 18 (Reuters) &#8211; The United Arab Emirates on Monday awarded \nRaytheon Co. a 5.7 billion dirhams ($1.55 billion) contract to supply \nits air force with platform systems to launch missiles, a UAE military \nspokesman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n agreement was signed at the week-long IDEX military exhibition in Abu \nDhabi and followed the award on Sunday of a 1.3 billion dirhams contract\n to Raytheon to supply the UAE with patriot missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n UAE armed forces signed a total of 7.2 billion dirhams in contracts on \nMonday, including 5.8 billion dirhams with international companies, \nBrigadier General Mohammed al-Hassani said, speaking through a \ntranslator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UAE has signed a total of 12 billion dirhams in contracts since the IDEX exhibition started on Sunday, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lockheed\n Martin, Germany&#8217;s Diehl Defence, and Sweden&#8217;s Saab on Monday launched \nat IDEX the Falcon air defence weapon system, billed as a replacement to\n the Hawk system used by countries in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Falcon\n was developed in response to a UAE request for a replacement for the \nHawk system and talks are underway to sell it to the Gulf state, Scott \nArnold, Lockheed Martin&#8217;s vice-president and deputy head of Integrated \nAir and Missile Defense said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weapons\n sales to the UAE have come under scrutiny over the past year due to the\n country&#8217;s involvement in the Yemen war that has killed tens of \nthousands of people and pushed the country to the brink of starvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The  UAE and Saudi Arabia are leading a military coalition, which includes  local forces drawn from Yemeni factions, that is trying to restore the  internationally recognised government ousted from power in 2014 by the  Iran-aligned Houthi movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>($1 US = 3.6728 UAE dirham)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Writing by  Alexander Cornwell.
