{"id":3929,"date":"2019-03-05T18:19:14","date_gmt":"2019-03-06T00:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/planesintheair.com\/?p=3929"},"modified":"2019-03-06T07:36:41","modified_gmt":"2019-03-06T13:36:41","slug":"delta-may-order-200-new-jets-considers-alitalia-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/?p=3929","title":{"rendered":"Delta May Order 200 New Jets, Considers Alitalia Investment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>(Reuters)\n &#8211; Delta Air Lines fueled the appetite of planemakers on Tuesday after \nChief Executive Ed Bastian said the airline planned to replace some 200 \nBoeing 757 and 767 aircraft over the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plans come as the second largest U.S. airline seeks to grow  internationally, though Bastian said at a conference that the company  had not yet decided whether to invest in struggling Italian carrier Alitalia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Atlanta-based  Delta&#8217;s potential fleet order, which analysts say would be worth over $10 billion, could boost proposals by Boeing Co to launch a new plane in  that segment while Airbus is preparing to counter with a new version of A321 and the larger A330neo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delta\n is &#8220;very interested&#8221; and in discussions with Boeing about its proposed \nnew midsized airplane, known as the NMA, Bastian said. Boeing will \ndecide in 2020 whether to produce the plane which industry sources say \nwould have two aisles and seat seven across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n plane aims to address the so-called middle of the jet market between \ntraditional narrowbody jets with one aisle and long-distance widebody \nplanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully they&#8217;ll decide to go,&#8221; Bastian said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delta\n is already in the process of replacing one-third of its mainline fleet,\n one of the largest and oldest among U.S. airlines, in the next five \nyears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delta shares were up 2.5 percent at $50.03 in afternoon trading after Bastian said spring and summer travel demand was solid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/A220-1.jpg?fit=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3933\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/A220-1.jpg 5568w, https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/A220-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/A220-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/A220-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>Delta Air Lines reveals their first A220 in Atlanta, Georgia at the TechOPS engine shop at Hartsfield Jackson International airport on Monday October 29,2018. (Chris Rank\/Rank Studios)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>ALITALIA INVESTMENT?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bastian\n said it was too early to decide whether to invest in Alitalia, which \nwas put under special administration in 2017 after workers rejected the \nlatest in a long line of rescue plans, leaving the Italian government \nseeking a buyer to save the airline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\n state-controlled railway Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) said last month it \nwould start negotiations with Delta and EasyJet Plc to draft a rescue \nplan, the third in a decade, for the struggling airline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delta\n executives have held talks in Rome in recent weeks, according to \nItalian industry sources, but doubts remain whether an outside investor \nwould be willing to take a minority stake in the strike-prone airline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bastian\n said that the numbers being thrown around for Alitalia are &#8220;pretty \nlarge&#8221; and &#8220;not the kind of numbers that we&#8217;re considering, just to \nquell any concerns.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still,\n he said it makes sense to consider an investment in Italy, an important\n market for U.S. consumers, and noted that Delta&#8217;s global growth over \ntime will skew toward international rather than congested domestic \nmarkets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That growth could come through direct investments in overseas carriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You\n can&#8217;t actually own partner carriers so you have to find ways to \ninfluence them beyond just a commercial contract as a partner, and what \nwe have found is that by making an investment into these businesses we \ncan get actually inside the board room and help to start shape the \nstrategy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Reporting  by Tracy Rucinski in Chicago, additional reporting by Tim Hepher in  Paris; Writing by Nick Zieminski; Editing by Phil Berlowitz and Lisa  Shumaker)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Alitalia_DC-8.jpg?fit=640%2C461\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3948\" width=\"620\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Alitalia_DC-8.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Alitalia_DC-8-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Alitalia_DC-8-768x554.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Delta Air Lines fueled the appetite of planemakers on Tuesday after Chief Executive Ed Bastian said the airline planned to replace some 200 Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft over the next decade.
