{"id":6899,"date":"2019-12-02T20:56:41","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T02:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/planesintheair.com\/?p=6899"},"modified":"2019-12-02T20:56:41","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T02:56:41","slug":"union-pacific-sues-texas-town-over-1870s-era-jobs-promise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/?p=6899","title":{"rendered":"Union Pacific Sues Texas Town Over 1870\u2019s-Era Jobs Promise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/railroad-classification-yard-4578535_1920.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/railroad-classification-yard-4578535_1920.jpg 600w, https:\/\/planesintheair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/railroad-classification-yard-4578535_1920-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Union Pacific<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.up.com\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>(NYSE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/UNP?p=UNP&amp;.tsrc=fin-srch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"UNP (opens in a new tab)\">UNP<\/a>) is suing the city of Palestine, Texas, to nullify a 150-year-old contract to keep a certain number of jobs in the town indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement between Union Pacific and Palestine \u2014 which was signed in 1872 \u2014 dates back to the days when the city was at the crossroads of several railroad companies that promised to keep jobs there indefinitely, according to the\u00a0Palestine Herald-Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Union Pacific&#8217;s lawsuit, filed Nov. 27 with the U.S. District Courts in the Eastern District of Texas, alleges the railroad&#8217;s contract with Palestine should have been invalidated when the federal Surface Transportation Board became the nation&#8217;s regulating authority for freight rail in 1996; and again in 1997, when Union Pacific merged with the Missouri-Pacific Railroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement requires the Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad to keep 0.52% of its total jobs in Palestine, local officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Union Pacific operates around 32,000 miles of track in 23 Western states.
