President Trump\u00a0accused\u00a0Iranian\u00a0general Qassem Soleimani of planning \u201cimminent and sinister attacks\u201d Friday in his first televised remarks since the\u00a0<\/a>deadly airstrike that killed the general\u00a0<\/a>at\u00a0Baghdad’s international airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We took action last night to stop a war,\u201d Trump said during brief remarks\u00a0at his Mar-a-Lago\u00a0resort in Florida. \u201cWe did not take action to start a war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without divulging details about what led to the early morning airstrike that killed Soleimani and nine others, the president said the United States “caught” the general “in the act and terminated him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSoleimani made the death of innocent people his sick passion,\u201d Trump\u00a0added, saying that “what the U.S. did\u00a0yesterday should have been done long ago.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The killing of Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, marks a major escalation in the standoff between Washington and Tehran, which has careened from one crisis to another since Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed crippling sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior State Department officials described the killing as a defensive strike supported by solid intelligence and claimed\u00a0Soleimani was planning imminent attacks against United States interests and personnel in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
