It will also add additional concession space in the gate\u00a0areas, and improve the airports\u00a0infrastructure.\u00a0The expansion project will be built in two phases, with the board approving\u00a0a\u00a0contract with Sundt Construction on\u00a0Wednesday. The terminal upgrades are\u00a0expected to begin this June, with completion scheduled by\u00a0November of 2017. The project will be funded by the Federal Aviation Administration through its passenger facility charge program, and the remaining cost\u00a0will be covered by\u00a0the Tucson Airport Authority. No local tax funds will be used\u00a0for the project, according to\u00a0the airport authority.<\/p>\n<h2>Tucson Airport construction schedule<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before\u00a0the\u00a0initial construction can begin, two airlines will need\u00a0to relocate\u00a0their ticket counters. American Airlines will move\u00a0to the far west end of the terminal, while United Airlines will move to the far east end of the terminal. The first phase will\u00a0include work focused\u00a0on the main\u00a0terminal facility. The second phase\u00a0will update\u00a0the security check points. The Concourse B security area will be relocated to the far west end of the terminal. It will also be expanded from three lanes to four, with the\u00a0addition\u00a0of new\u00a0security equipment. The security checkpoints on Concourse A will also be relocated and expanded.\u00a0The area\u00a0beyond the two new security checkpoints\u00a0will be expanded with additional seating. New retail and concessions areas are expected to be completed\u00a0by\u00a0December of 2017.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tucson Airport history<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tucson was the home of\u00a0the first municipally owned airport in the United States,\u00a0first opening in 1919.\u00a0Commercial flights began in 1928 with Standard Airlines, which would later become part of TWA, and then American Airlines. The Tucson Airport Authority was created to operate the airport in 1948.
