Ethiopian Airlines expands widebody fleet with Boeing 777X jets

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, March 5, 2024, PRNewswire – Boeing co. (NYSE: BA) and Ethiopian Airlines announced today an agreement for the East African airline to purchase eight 777-9 passenger airplanes and the potential for up to 12 additional jets.

Ethiopian Airlines’ selection of 777-9 jets positions the carrier as the first 777X customer in Africa and builds on its landmark 2023 order for 11 787 Dreamliner and 20 737 MAX airplanes to modernize and grow its fleet.

Boeing airplanes make up more than half of Ethiopian Airlines’ current fleet, including 29 787 Dreamliners, 20 777s, three 767s, 27 Next-Generation 737s and 15 737 MAX jets. Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing continue to explore opportunities to further develop the country’s aerospace industry, including support for Ethiopian Airlines’ MRO capabilities, industrial development, training capabilities at the Ethiopian Aviation University and STEM education, as well as equipping the Ethiopian Museum of Science with aerospace exhibits.

Rolls-Royce creating over 200 new jobs in Cardiff and Glasgow

Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (London: RR) Submarines today announced plans to open new offices in Cardiff and Glasgow to attract the best talent and meet growth in demand from the Royal Navy and the recent AUKUS announcement.

The locations of satellite offices in Cardiff and Glasgow, funded by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), have been selected to help access the skilled talent pools in both regions, with more than 100 jobs being created in each city.

The increase in demand for technical specialists will see new offices opened in St Mellons, Cardiff, and at the Airport Business Park in Glasgow. The business intends to attract the best engineers and specialists from around the UK to work on a growing portfolio of defence nuclear projects.

In March 2023, it was confirmed that Rolls-Royce Submarines would provide all the nuclear reactor plants that will power new attack submarines as part of the tri-lateral agreement between Australia, the UK and US.

In Cardiff, Rolls-Royce Submarines is looking to attract people with a background in mechanical design, materials engineering, structural integrity analysis, thermal analysis and fluid dynamics. For Glasgow, the focus is on recruiting those with a pedigree in electrical controls and instrumentation and cyber security.

American Airlines orders another 85 A321neo aircraft

Toulouse, France, March 4, 2024 – American Airlines Group (Nasdaq: AAL) has signed a firm order for an additional 85 Airbus Group SE (Paris: AIR) A321neo aircraft, taking its total order for the aircraft type to 219 aircraft.

American Airlines took delivery of its first A321neo in February 2019, and 70 have been delivered as of January 31, 2024. The airline is the world’s largest operator of A320 Family aircraft, the world’s largest A321 operator (CEO and NEO) and the largest customer for the A321neo in North America.

KiwiRail Network Rebuild resumes on Western Line

KiwiRail teams will be returning to the Western Line this month to complete Rail Network Rebuild work– requiring a change in train timetables.

KiwiRail will be working at numerous sites between Newmarket and New Lynn between 10 March and early May.

Between 11 March and 24 April, trains will only be able to run on one of the two tracks while the other is being worked on. Over this period trains will run on a revised schedule – every 20 minutes throughout the day and every 30 minutes in the evening.

People should use the AT Mobile app and AT Journey Planner to help plan their usual journeys and AT’s contact centre (09 366 6400) can also assist. AT Ambassadors will help customers at key stations the week commencing Monday 11 March.

Etihad Airways expands schedule with two new destinations

Abu Dhabi, UAE – In the latest significant boost to its global network, Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has announced substantial updates to its summer schedule.

This strategic expansion includes the addition of new flights and increased frequencies to existing routes, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a global connector and enhancing travel options.

The airline is set to broaden its reach by launching flights to two new fantastic and sought-after destinations: Beginning 15 June, Etihad will operate three seasonal weekly flights between Abu Dhabi and Antalya (AYT), Turkey. Operations to Jaipur (JAI), India will start 16 June with four weekly flights.

Starting 15 June, Etihad is increasing its service frequency to a number of key destinations:

The weekly flights to Thiruvananthapuram and Amman will be increased by three, totalling 10 and 14 respectively. Additional services include three more flights to Cairo for a total of 24, Karachi increasing to 17, and Colombo to 20 weekly flights.

The latest expansion contributes to an overall 33 per cent increase in Etihad’s total weekly flights, growing from 635 last summer to 847 in 2024, and extends Etihad’s reach from 65 to 75 destinations, significantly enhancing worldwide connectivity.

Boeing awarded $3.4 billion contract for 17 P-8A Poseidon aircraft

Arlington, Virginia, February 29, 2024 — The U.S. Navy has awarded Boeing (NYSE: BA) a $3.4 billion contract to begin manufacturing 14 P-8A Poseidon aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force and three additional P-8’s for the German Navy.

In November 2023, Canada announced its decision to acquire the P-8A Poseidon to replace its current fleet of CP-140 Aurora’s. The first P-8A for Canada is expected to deliver in 2026.

With the P-8 acquisition, Boeing’s economic commitments to Canada have the potential to generate annual benefits of more than 3,000 jobs for Canadian industry and value-chain partners, and at least $358 million to Canada’s gross domestic product over a 10-year period.

Following the initial procurement of five P-8 aircraft in June 2021, Germany added three additional aircraft to bring the total number of P-8’s for the German Navy to eight. The first aircraft will be delivered in 2025, to replace the country’s fleet of P-3 Orion aircraft.

Lufthansa City Airlines confirms first destinations

The Lufthansa Group’s most recent airline, Lufthansa City Airlines, will take off in summer 2024 – now the first destinations have also been confirmed. The airline will initially fly to the following destinations from Munich: Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Hanover as well as Birmingham, Bordeaux and Manchester. In the following months, Lufthansa City Airlines will gradually expand its network and offer further destinations in Europe.

By ordering 40 Airbus A220-300 aircraft and a further 20 purchase options, the Lufthansa Group has set a clear signal for the future of the new airline. The competitive strengthening of the short-haul network is essential for strengthening the Lufthansa Group’s market position and the planned growth of Lufthansa long-haul routes.

Passengers on board Lufthansa City Airlines can expect the Lufthansa product offering and customer experience for short and medium-haul routes. The first two of four Airbus A319 aircraft to be deployed this year have already been painted in the new Lufthansa City livery.

Flights will be available from the end of April via the familiar Lufthansa Group sales channels.
