American Airlines increases investment in hydrogen electric innovator

Fort Worth, Texas, and Everett, Washington, July 2, 2024 American Airlines Group (Nasdaq: AAL) today announced that it has entered into a conditional purchase agreement with clean aviation innovator ZeroAvia for 100 hydrogen-electric engines intended to power regional jet aircraft with zero inflight emissions save for water vapor.

Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines receive approval for joint venture

July 5, 2024 – Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines (SIA) today received the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore’s (CCCS) approval of their commercial joint venture agreement.

With this approval, the airlines will be able to deepen their strategic partnership on a wider range of commercial activities that will bring greater benefits to both airlines, as well as Indonesia and Singapore. These potentially include operating joint revenue sharing flights between the two countries, coordinating flight schedules to offer travellers more options and seamless connectivity between Singapore and Indonesia and beyond, and exploring joint sales and marketing initiatives that provide greater value to both airlines’ customers.

Since Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines signed an agreement to deepen their partnership in May 2023, the carriers have been working on initiatives including giving GarudaMiles and KrisFlyer members the option to earn and redeem miles on codeshare routes. They have also embarked on joint marketing initiatives to promote tourism activities.

Etihad Airways starts new route to Jaipur in northwest India

Emirates celebrates one year of Premium Economy in Singapore

Singapore, 19 June 2024 – Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, celebrates a successful year since the debut of its Premium Economy product in Singapore, having so far carried 26,000 passengers on nearly 730 four-class A380 flights between Singapore and Dubai from June 2023 to May 2024. The airline’s Premium Economy product was especially popular among families and solo travellers from Singapore, with top outbound destinations including London, Dubai, Paris, Barcelona, and New York JFK.

Emirates’ Premium Economy can be experienced on flights EK 354 and EK 355 between Singapore and Dubai, which takes passenger comfort to new heights with an extensive suite of features that transforms the journey itself into a destination.

The Premium Economy cabin is located at the front of the main deck with 56 seats laid out in a 2-4-2 configuration. Korean Air picks Air Incheon as preferred bidder for Asiana Airlines freight business

Korean Air Lines Co (Seoul: 003490) has selected Air Incheon as the preferred bidder for the sale of Asiana Airlines’ global cargo freighter business. The decision was made at the Board of Directors meeting held on June 17.

Korean Air selected Air Incheon as the preferred bidder based on several key criteria: the certainty of completing the transaction, the ability to maintain and enhance long-term competitiveness of the air cargo business, and the capability to mobilize funds through a competent consortium.

Founded in 2012, Air Incheon is Korea’s only all-cargo airline, with operations focused in Asia. Air Incheon is expected to strengthen its competitiveness by utilizing Asiana Airlines’ long-haul network to the Americas and Europe, and fleet of larger cargo aircraft.

Korean Air plans to sign a framework agreement with Air Incheon in July after agreeing on the contract conditions. The agreement is subject to review by the European Commission.

Alstom signs contract with Polo Logistica FS to supply Traxx locomotives

June 19, 2024 – Alstom SA (Paris: ALSO), global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a contract with Mercitalia Rail, a company of the Polo Logistica FS (*) for the supply of 70 Traxx Universal locomotives for Italy, along with 12 years of full maintenance services. Some of the locomotives will be equipped with last mile technology. The contract is valued at over €323 million and includes the option to supply an additional 30 locomotives and an extension of the maintenance services.

Traxx Universal is the most advanced four-axle locomotive platform offering high energy efficiency and traction capacity. The functional design, coupled with an extended maintenance plan featuring reduced intervention frequencies, guarantees elevated levels of reliability and availability. The last mile system enables such as seamless transition from line haul traction into non-electrified lines, such as those found in ports, industrial areas, or terminals.

All Traxx Universal locomotives intended for the Italian market are manufactured at Alstom’s site in Vado Ligure. This facility, with over a century of vehicle production experience, benefits from the expertise of more than 300 people. The site has been integral to various stages of production, including electrical and pneumatic sub-assembly, bogie assembly, vehicle painting, final assembly, testing, rain tests, vehicle weighing, and repair of power and control electronics.

Alstom signs contract for 10 new Aventra trains for London’s Elizabeth line

June 14, 2024 – Alstom SA (Paris: ALSO), a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a contract worth around €430 (£370) million for 10 new nine-car Aventra trains for Transport for London’s Elizabeth line, along with associated maintenance until 2046.

Opened in 2022, the Elizabeth line continues to experience passenger demand ahead of predictions and its current 70-strong fleet of Alstom-built Aventra Class 345 trains would be insufficient to meet demand later this decade and through the 2030s.

Like the rest of the fleet, the additional Aventra electric multiple unit (EMU) passenger trains will be built at Alstom’s Derby Litchurch Lane Works, the only UK facility that designs, engineers, builds and tests trains for domestic and export markets.
