View More Open Road with Garmin’s Latest RV GPS Navigator

Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), today announced the latest and largest addition to its RV-specific GPS navigator series – the RV 1090.  With a new 10-inch high-resolution, edge-to-edge touchscreen display, the RV 1090 allows travelers to see the most important information along their route more clearly than ever before. With both portrait and landscape-view options, the bright screen of the RV 1090 can accommodate an RV or towable trailer.

“The extra-large display of the RV 1090 makes it easy for travelers to see the navigation details that matter most on their journey,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “Whether you’re headed through your favorite national park with family or embarking on a cross-country adventure, drivers will now have a sharp, responsive display tailored for RV vacations.”

Ready for Adventure

The RV 1090 provides all the core RV-related navigation features from legacy Garmin RV navigators, including custom RV routing1 that takes into account the size and weight of the camper or trailer to find an appropriate route option, as well as road warnings that allow users to foresee upcoming hazards including sharp curves and steep grades. Sightseeing is made easy with a preloaded directory of RV Parks and Services and Tripadvisor® traveler ratings. Users can also take advantage of preloaded travel content that includes Ultimate Public Campgrounds, KOA®, iOverlander™, a directory of U.S. national parks, Foursquare® points of interest, and street maps for North America.2

Convenience on the Road

Additionally, travelers can benefit from other RV 1090 features that add convenience and encourage safer driving. This includes Bluetooth® hands-free calling3 and a revamped Garmin voice assistant option that simplifies startup commands to “OK Garmin,” so drivers will be able to organically speak to the RV 1090 while keeping their hands on the steering wheel. Built-in Wi-Fi® allows the navigator to perform map and software updates without connecting to a computer.

Trip Planning Made Easy

With the new easy trip planning feature, owners can pair the RV 1090 with the Garmin Drive™ app4 to import and share GPX files before or during a trip. Additionally, the Garmin Drive app will allow users access to live fuel prices, traffic and weather, and the option to view smartphone notifications and photoLive traffic cameras. The RV 1090 can also be easily paired with the BC™35 wireless backup camera or third-party compatible backup cameras5 to clearly see behind the RV when moving in reverse.

Mounting Options

The extra-large RV navigator comes equipped with a variety of secure mounting options to complement any cab interior. This includes a powered magnetic mount with heavy-duty suction cup, a screw-down mount and a ball adapter with an AMPS plate that’s compatible with third-party hardware – including RAM mounting systems.

Available now, the RV 1090 has a suggested retail price of $699.99. To learn more, visit garmin.com/rv

GM to Boost Heavy-Duty Pickup Truck Production

FLINT, Mich. (Reuters) – General Motors Co president Mark Reuss said on Wednesday that the automaker is investing about $150 million at its Flint Assembly plant in Michigan, to boost production of heavy duty trucks by another 40,000 vehicles a year.

Reuss announced the investment at the Flint truck assembly plant wearing a United Auto Workers pin.

The Detroit automaker announced in February it was adding 1,000 jobs in Flint to build a new generation of heavy-duty pickup trucks.

GM did not say that the latest investment would add more jobs at the plant, but Reuss said there could be opportunities to add workers as the launch of the automaker’s new trucks progresses.

GM has been under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump and lawmakers of both parties to add jobs in the United States after it said last November it would idle a small car assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio, and had no new products for three other U.S. manufacturing plants.

The Flint investment will include upgrades to the plant’s conveyors and other new tooling, and will be completed in the first half of 2020. GM has invested more than $1.6 billion in the plant since 2013.

Last month, GM said it would invest $24 million to increase truck production at its assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which makes Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models.

Sales of heavy-duty pickups in the United States have grown to more than 600,000 vehicles a year, up more than 20 percent since 2013, according to industry data. Prices for luxury models can easily top $70,000.

GM’s Chevrolet and GMC brands have long trailed Ford Motor Co’s F-series heavy duty trucks in the lucrative segment. The new Chevrolet and GMC heavy duty trucks have been re-engineered to tow heavier trailers, and keep pace in what has become an arms race among the Detroit Three automakers to claim superior torque and towing capability.

Nissan Recycles Old Leaf Batteries for Opus Camping Trailer

The RV industry has seen an impressive resurgence in recent years. And while the electric vehicle scene is also booming, options that take both sectors into consideration are still rather thin. Nissan already has an all-electric mini-camper in its arsenal but today we’re getting a look at a new project coming down the line. Leaning on technology from its Leaf electric vehicle, Nissan is leveraging rechargeable energy on its ROAM battery pack, which will be paired with the forthcoming Opus concept camping trailer. Enough on-board energy to keep campers warm and fed for nearly a week makes this one of the more intriguing concepts we’ve seen in a while.
