Volaris history

The airline was founded back in August of 2005 under the original name of Vuela Airlines. Initial investors in the company included Grupo Televisa, Carlos Slim’s Inbursa Insurance Company, TACA Airlines (now part of Avianca), and the Discovery Americas Fund. Each partner owned one quarter of the new airline. In 2010, it was reported that Televisa and Inbursa had sold their stake in Volaris to U.S. based Indigo Partners. Scheduled service began in March of 2006. Volaris then announced a codeshare partnership with Southwest Airlines in 2008. The airline stayed out of Mexico City originally, due to heavy competition and high costs of operating at the Benito Juarez International Airport. The airline would then acquire gates, slots, and routes at the Mexico City Airport from bankrupt Mexicana Airlines. Flights out of Mexico City began in September of 2010. The airline then moved the majority of its Toluca flights to create a new flight connection hub in Guadalajara. The airline then formed its first international codeshare partnership with Condor Airlines of Germany in September of 2012. Volaris and Southwest ended their codesharing agreement in February of 2013 following Southwest’s acquisition of AirTran.
