Shark Week is coming to a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737. Shark Week is an annual programming ritual on the Discovery Channel. the one week block of programming was first aired in 1988. The show has continued to grow in popularity over the years, and is now the longest running show in cable television history. It is currently being broadcasted in more than 72 countries worldwide. The programming was originally planned as a way to help promote shark conservation efforts. Sharks are now being killed at an alarming rate. If nothing is done to prevent the killing of sharks, they may very well become extinct over the next couple of decades. An estimated 100 million sharks are killed every year around the world, with over 73 million killed each year just for the harvesting of their fins. The shark fins can be extremely valuable, especially in regions were income levels are very low. The fins are considered a delicacy in Asian cuisine, and are mainly used in Shark Fin Soup.

Southwest Airlines has unveiled its new special Shark Week logo jet. The Boeing 737 aircraft will fly with the Shark Week theme livery until the end of August. Southwest Airlines has a partnership with the Discovery Network, and passengers aboard this aircraft will be able to preview some of the featured shows that will be broadcast this year between June 26 and July 3. Southwest Airlines also has an additional connection with Shark Week this year. One of the new shows premiering this season is “Jungle Shark”, which discusses the bull sharks that call Costa Rica home. Southwest just launched new service to that country, as the carrier begins to expand internationally. Southwest flies to both San Jose and Liberia in Costa Rica.
