Denver International Airport is featured in this Friday’s Pic of the Week. The picture was shot very early on New Years day 2016. The location of Denver on the U.S. map makes it a key location for airlines. That central location makes Denver home to one of the busier hub airports in the nation. Continental, Frontier, People Express, and Western Airlines all called Denver home for its location. These airlines were all based at the old Stapleton Airport, prior to the construction of the new Denver International Airport.

As times changed, so would the face of Denver’s aviation landscape. People Express went bankrupt. Frontier would also go bankrupt, but later would be re-created. Western Airlines merged with Delta Air Lines. United Airlines would also acquire Continental Airlines. Limited gate space and runways unable to deal with Denver’s weather lead to the construction of a new airport. The profile of the new terminal reflects the areas snow capped Rocky Mountains.
