Eastern Air Lines history

The original Eastern Air Lines was created in 1930 when Pitcairn Aviation was renamed as Eastern Air Transport. Later purchased by General Motors, it became Eastern Air Lines following the Air Mail Act in 1934. The airline was purchased by the great World War I pilot Eddie Rickenbacker for $3.5 million in 1938. Under the leadership of Eddie Rickenbacker, Eastern experienced a stretch of phenomenal growth. Following a stretch of sustained profitability, the airline started to suffer economically due to heavy competition from other air operators. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, Eastern began to fall on hard times. Under the leadership of Frank Borman and then Frank Lorenzo of Texas Air, labor unrest lead to the airlines demise.

A new Eastern Air Lines rises
