Airbus Adds More Deliveries, Breaks 3 Month Order Drought

PARIS (Reuters) – Airbus delivered 49 aircraft in July, up from 36 in June as it continues to recover from a slump in deliveries during this year’s coronavirus lockdowns, the company said on Thursday.

The aircraft were all narrow-body jets, highlighting a dearth of demand for the industry’s biggest models, which last month prompted Airbus to trim A350 production for a second time.

The month’s deliveries included 47 A320neo-family jets.

Airbus also scored its first orders in three months as it sold two A320neos to an undisclosed customer and two A321neos to Lufthansa Technik, the modification and repairs business of German carrier Lufthansa <LHA.DE>.

So far in 2020, Airbus has delivered 245 jets and sold 369, or 302 after cancellations.

Demand for aircraft has been crippled by the coronavirus crisis and its heavy impact on air travel.

Airbus is boosting deliveries on a monthly basis despite the industry’s worst crisis as it negotiates deals with airlines.

But although deliveries are rising compared to the trough seen in April, several bankers and analysts have questioned how many of the aircraft are being placed into service as airlines struggle to save cash. Some are said to go straight to storage.

Airbus has issued default notices and threatened to sue airlines that refuse to collect planes already built while showing flexibility in deferring jets not yet in the factory.

Virgin Atlantic Airline Files for US Bankruptcy Protection

NEW YORK — Virgin Atlantic, the airline founded by British businessman Richard Branson, filed Tuesday for protection in U.S. bankruptcy court as it tries to survive the virus pandemic that is hammering the airline industry.

The airline made the Chapter 15 filing in U.S. federal bankruptcy court in New York after a proceeding in the United Kingdom.

A spokeswoman for Virgin Atlantic said the bankruptcy filing is part of a court process in the United Kingdom to carry out a restructuring plan that the airline announced last month. The process is supported by a majority of the airline’s creditors, and the company hopes to emerge from the process in September, she said.

Emirates resumes flights to Kuwait City and Lisbon

Emirates has announced it will resume passenger services to Kuwait City (5 August) and Lisbon (16 August). This will take Emirates’ passenger network to 70 destinations in August, over 50% of its pre-pandemic destination network, as the airline gradually resumes operations with the safety of its customers, crew and communities as its top priority.

Flights from Dubai to Kuwait City will operate as a daily service and flights from Dubai to Lisbon will operate three times a week. The flights will be operated with the Emirates Boeing 777-300ER and can be booked on emirates.com or via travel agents.

Passengers travelling between the Americas, Europe, Africa, Middle East, and Asia Pacific can enjoy safe and convenient connections via Dubai. Customers from Emirates’ network can stop over or travel to Dubai as the city has re-opened for international business and leisure visitors. 

COVID-19 PCR tests are mandatory for all inbound and transit passengers arriving to Dubai (and the UAE), including UAE citizens, residents and tourists, irrespective of the country they are coming from.

LATAM Airlines to Fire ‘at Least’ 2,700 Workers in Brazil

BRASILIA (Reuters) – LATAM Airlines will fire “at least” 2,700 workers in Brazil, including pilots, its Brazilian arm said on Saturday, as the bankrupt carrier struggles to cut costs and cope with an industry collapse due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, LATAM Brasil said it opened a voluntary redundancy process on Friday which will run through Aug. 4, after which a further minimum 2,700 jobs will be cut.

The announcement followed the breakdown in talks with the SNA union over workers’ pay, the statement said. O Globo and O Estado de S. Paulo newspapers had reported the redundancies earlier on Saturday. LATAM said it pays its pilots and crew more than its rivals in Brazil, and the pandemic has forced it to “match industry practices.”

The layoffs are the latest in efforts to downsize Latin America’s largest airline. Before the novel coronavirus outbreak, the airline had 43,000 workers worldwide, with most of them in Brazil and Chile.

LATAM is seeking to restructure $18 billion in debt. When it filed for U.S. bankruptcy protection in May, it was the world’s largest airline to date to seek an emergency reorganization due to the pandemic.

British Airways Plans to Sell Shares and Avoid Bailout

British Airways is scrapping all its Boeing 747 jumbo jets.

It’s cutting capacity to prepare for years of weak demand for air travel.

Now Reuters sources say owner IAG has a plan to get its finances in good order too.

They say the company will probably sell shares at the end of the summer, in a bid to raise almost 2.9 billion dollars.

Though other options for raising the money are being considered.

The cash would be used to keep group airlines in business, and avoid a government bailout.

That’s in contrast with European rivals.

Air France has secured a 7 billion euro package from the French government.

Germany’s Lufthansa agreed a 9 billion euro rescue deal.

IAG has avoided any such agreement, hoping to limit state involvement in how it’s run.

It has though taken state-backed loans in the UK and Spain, where it owns Iberia.

The sources say the airline is working with banks including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley on the new plan.

It’s thought an announcement could coincide with financial results due at the end of the month.

Neither the airline nor the banks would comment on the reports.

IAG shares have lost about 66% of their value this year.

On Friday (July 24) afternoon they were in the red again, down over 5%.

Tesla Reports Q2 Profit, Announces Texas Gigafactory

Tesla (TSLA) posted a surprise second-quarter profit last week on cost cutting and strong deliveries, offsetting the effects of its Covid-19 related factory shutdowns. The report may help the electric vehicle manufacturer gain inclusion into the S&P 500 index (^SPX).

Tesla announced earned net income of $104 million for the quarter, or $0.50 per share. This marks the first time the company has posted four straight quarterly profit, a benchmark for the company to be considered for inclusion in the highly coveted S&P 500.

This marks another major win for Chief Executive Elon Musk, whose quest to lead the global auto industry with Tesla, and the aerospace industry with SpaceX, has increasingly been making major leaps forward.

Musk said last Wednesday that the city of Austin, located in Travis County, would be the site of Tesla’s newest factory. The victory for Texas comes at a loss for Oklahoma, which also was seeking to have the factory land in Tulsa. The facility seeks to create as many as 5,000 new jobs. The County offered up to $65 million in tax rebates to entice the company, and plans to begin construction in the third quarter.

The additional plant is slated to produce Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for the Eastern half of the United States, as well as a potential new Tesla Semi truck and its Cybertruck pickup. Elon Musk has stated that his cars are not affordable enough yet for the average consumer, and he hopes to develop a plan to address that issue.

The company also needs to address its growing need for affordable battery cell production, and is looking to expand its partnerships with Panasonic Corp <PCRFY> and Contemporary Amperex Technology of China (CATL) <300750.SZ>.

Emirates to Resume Flights to Stockholm on 1st of August

Stockholm, Sweden

Emirates will resume passenger services to Stockholm with weekly flights from 1 August, expanding its network in Europe to 22 cities, and connecting customers from Europe to the Middle East, Asia Pacific and Africa.

The restart of Stockholm flights means that all Emirates gateways in Scandinavia will have resumed services by August, with flights to Oslo resuming from 4 August and services to Copenhagen being in operation since June.

This will take the airline’s passenger network to 63 destinations in August, offering customers around the world more convenient connections to Dubai, and via Dubai.

Flights between Stockholm and Dubai will operate once a week on Saturdays. Emirates flight EK157 will depart Dubai at 08:40 and arrives in Stockholm at 13:10. The return flight EK 158 leaves Stockholm Arlanda Airport at 15:05 and arrives into Dubai International Airport at 23:20. All times are local.

The flights will be operated with the Emirates Boeing 777-300ER and can be booked on emirates.com or via travel agents.

New routes from the Northeast
