Solaris wins new hydrogen bus contracts in Barcelona and Essen

The CAF Group company has consolidated its leading position in the thriving hydrogen city bus market with two new contracts for the supply of 57 vehicles for a combined value of over 40 million Euros for Barcelona, Spain and Essen, Germany. Solaris’ experience in rolling out hydrogen technology has seen 40 operators in 10 European countries already place their trust in the company, having won orders for in excess of 700 vehicles.

Supported by the ongoing development of the hydrogen vehicle market and the increasing orders for hydrogen fuel cell-powered buses, Solaris has intensified its business activity in this segment over the recent months. In fact, in connection with this technology, last year Solaris made a major investment constructing a new building exclusively to manufacture hydrogen-powered buses.

Solaris’ substantial backlog, which includes supplies to various operators in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and Slovakia, illustrates the current relevance of this market. While 99 hydrogen buses were registered in Europe in 2022, pending official data for 2023, at the end of the third quarter of the year a total of 137 new bus registrations had already been made in Europe, representing a 38% increase compared to the 12 months in the previous year. If we add the data for the last 3 months of 2023, the figures would undoubtedly reveal how strongly this sector has grown and how much Solaris has contributed to this situation. Just a few years ago, specifically in 2018, not one single hydrogen bus was registered in Europe.

DHL supply chain deploys first class 8 electric trucks in North America

DHL Supply Chain (Xetra: DHLn), the Americas leader in contract logistics, announced the deployment of its first Class 8 electric trucks, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to clean and efficient trucking operations. The company currently has two trucks in operation in California and in the coming weeks will take delivery of an additional 11 units to be deployed across Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and California.

The deployment represents a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to decarbonizing the transportation sector, one of the largest global contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

The cutting-edge electric truck boasts impressive capabilities, including:

  • Zero tailpipe emissions: Electric vehicles (EVs) are considered zero-emission technology (ZET), which means they do not produce any tailpipe carbon dioxide (CO2e) or nitrogen oxide emissions. Each EV that replaces a diesel truck saves, on average, 100 tons of CO2e annually.
  • Energy conservation: A six month DHL Supply Chain-led pilot of a class 8 EV truck revealed that the truck consumed on average 50% less energy for the same job compared to its diesel counterpart.
  • Extended range: The EV trucks get up to 250 miles on a single charge, covering the needs of many regional haul routes.
  • Right-sized charging: Equipped with fast-charging technology and remote monitoring capabilities, the EV trucks enable turnaround times that are aligned with the operational requirements.
  • Powerful performance: The EV trucks deliver superior horsepower and torque to their diesel counterparts, ensuring seamless integration into existing operations.
  • Improved driver satisfaction: During the pilot drivers shared a preference for EV over diesel due to its ‘quietness’ and low to no vibrations, leading to less fatigue.

A.P. Moller–Maersk to strengthen distribution network in India with more than 500 Electric Vehicles

Mumbai, India – A.P. Moller – Maersk (OTC: AMKBY) has the ambition to be Net Zero across business and provide customers with 100% green solutions by 2040. To achieve this goal, there is a strong need to decarbonise logistics at every stage. It is important not only for Maersk to achieve these sustainability goals but for the customers too, who are demanding environmentally friendly solutions that would decarbonise their supply chains.

In September 2022, Maersk unveiled its three-wheeler and four-wheeler EV’s in Mumbai, India and soon rolled them out for its first customer in the NCR region. Since then, the awareness around EV’s that can support distribution logistics in India has risen, and with that has come an unprecedented demand from several customers.

Maersk has recently tied up with a large e-Commerce platform in India to support its distribution requirements with a dedicated fleet of EV’s that range in the capacity of 550 to 700 Kgs with a driving range of over 120 km. Over 200+ vehicles have already been deployed across 15 cities, and more than 300 EV’s.

So far, Maersk’s EV fleet has covered more than 135,000 km. Maersk is also investing in creating a charging network for its fleet of EV’s, including the option to harness solar energy at its own facilities for warehouses across the country.

Volvo Cars Q2 results shows transformation proceeding full speed ahead

Volvo Cars (OTC: VLVLY) today reports a 39 per cent increase in operating profits, excluding joint ventures and associates, to SEK 6.4 bn and a corresponding EBIT margin of 6.3 per cent for the second quarter of 2023. The result came despite a SEK 0.9 bn, non-recurring item related to the redundancy programme announced in May, part of securing a more efficient and sustainable cost base for the future. Without this item, the underlying EBIT margin, excluding joint ventures and associates, was 7.2 per cent in the second quarter. This illustrates that the solid underlying performance momentum from the first three months of the year continued during this past quarter.
