Virgin America has announced that it will add service between Los Angeles and Hawaii. The flights will be flown by Airbus A320 aircraft with wingtip “Sharklets” once a day from Los Angeles to both Honolulu starting on May 5, and to Maui starting on June 14. Unlike Virgin’s flights to Hawaii from San Francisco, the LAX departures will be timed with connecting service in mind. However, the new routes are so close to the range limit of the Airbus A320 that the airline will have to suspend the flights during the winter season due to strong headwinds. Sorry Virgin America, but I would not get on a plane flying over the Pacific Ocean that possibly may run out of jet fuel before it reaches its destination!
