Qantas Adds New Routes to North Coast for Holidays by the Sea

  • Three new routes to Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay (Ballina)
  • Additional seats to Coffs Harbour from Sydney for April school holidays
  • Sale fares on new routes from $129 one-way

Qantas has today announced it will add three new routes and extra seats to the New South Wales north coast to support growing demand for holidays in Australia. From 1 April 2021, Qantas will launch three new routes to both Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay (Ballina).

  • Melbourne to Coffs Harbour – flights will operate daily with Qantas’ Boeing 717 aircraft, adding more than 1,750 seats on the route each week.
  • Brisbane to Coffs Harbour – flights will operate four days per week with the turboprop Q400 aircraft, adding around 600 seats on the route each week.
  • Canberra to Byron Bay – Qantas’ first ever direct service connecting the two destinations, offering two flights per week with the turboprop Q400 aircraft. Flights will initially operate in April and Qantas will look to continue the service from July in line with demand.

More seats will also be added between Sydney and Coffs Harbour with the introduction of Qantas’ larger two-class B717 aircraft during the April school holidays, operating alongside the Q400 which also operate on the route. This will see Qantas offer around 500 extra seats on the route each week (a total of 4,300 seats), and the option to travel in Business.

QantasLink CEO John Gissing said these new routes would provide Australians with more options to plan their next holiday in their own backyard.

“The beautiful coastal hubs of Byron Bay and Coffs Harbour continue to be incredibly popular with travellers, so it makes sense to provide direct connections from other capital cities to make them even more accessible.

“Travellers from Canberra can spend more time on the beach and less time on their journey with our direct service to Byron Bay.

“We’ll be promoting these new flights to millions of our frequent flyers across the country and think they’ll enjoy the benefits of our premium service, including complimentary food and drinks, baggage and lounge access before they fly out.

Qantas is offering special fares for flights on the new routes from $129 one-way for periods of travel between April and October, available at qantas.com or through Travel Agents, until 11:59pm 21 February 2021, unless sold out prior.

Qantas currently operates up to 20 return flights per week between Sydney and Ballina Byron Bay and 28 weekly return flights between Sydney and Coffs Harbour.

The announcement follows a suite of customer initiatives unveiled last week, including a boost to flexibility allowing unlimited flight changes until at least January 2022.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Qantas has introduced a number of initiatives improve safety and peace-of-mind when travelling domestically through its Fly Well program, including masks on board, hand sanitising stations and enhanced aircraft cleaning.

Kobe Bryant Dies in California Helicopter Crash

The sports world was in mourning following news Sunday that Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven other people died died in a helicopter crash. Weather is believed to have been a contributing factor in the accident, as the conditions at the time were poor. The National Transportation Safety Board has sent a team of investigators to the site.

The helicopter reportedly departed John Wayne Airport in Orange County at 9:06 a.m. local time. The group was heading to the Mamba Sports Academy in Newbury Park. The Federal Aviation Administration reported that no flight plan had been filed. The Sikorsky S-76B helicopter was flying in low clouds and fog, and was operating under “special VFR” (special visual flight rules) status, requiring the pilot to be responsible for determining safe flying requirements in challenging weather conditions..

The helicopter crashed in foggy conditions on steep terrain in the mountains near Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas, California. The crash was reported to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The crash set off a small brush fire in the area. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze, but were not able to find any survivors.

American Airlines Adding Super Bowl Flights to Miami

  • Airline increases service from hubs, adds special flights from Kansas City, Missouri, and San Francisco and San Jose, California

FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines, Miami’s hometown airline and the largest carrier serving Miami International Airport (MIA), is adding special flights from Kansas City, Missouri (MCI), and San Francisco (SFO) and San Jose (SJC), California, for football fans to cheer on their favorite teams at the big game. American has also added larger aircraft — Boeing 777-200s — from its hubs in New York (JFK), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX) and Chicago (ORD) to accommodate additional traffic to Miami for the game. Flights are available for purchase now.

New Seattle NHL Franchise Picks Alaska Airlines as a Founding Partner

The new Seattle NHL Franchise has picked Alaska Airlines as one of the professional hockey team’s founding Partners, as well as the official airline of the team, the companies announced today.

Under the sponsorship agreement between the SeaTac-based airline and the National Hockey League expansion team, the new Seattle Center arena’s main door and lobby area will be named the Alaska Airlines Atrium, featuring a giant Alaska sign and colors.

The arena atrium is part of the $950 million venue’s south side, and will serve as the main entrance for the facility.

MGM Agrees to Sell Bellagio to Blackstone for $4.25 Billion

(Bloomberg) — MGM Resorts International, pressured by investors to unload its remaining company-owned casinos, agreed to sell the Bellagio resort in Las Vegas to Blackstone Group for $4.25 billion and will continue to operate the property under a lease arrangement.

The Las Vegas-based casino company also agreed to sell the Circus Circus property on the Strip, along with 47 adjoining acres, to real estate mogul Phil Ruffin for $825 million, according to a statement Tuesday.

With the sales, MGM Resorts moves a step closer to becoming a landless casino company, marking a new era for the largest operator of casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. When all of its deals close, the company will have just two wholly owned properties, including the flagship MGM Grand, remaining under its ownership. The company is keeping a 5% stake in the Blackstone-led venture that’s buying Bellagio.

“The casino industry is evolving and we figured the best use of our intellectual capital was to focus on sports, live entertainment and reduce leverage,” Jim Murren, MGM’s chairman and chief executive officer, said in an interview. “It’s very historic for a variety of reasons.”

MGM has been restructuring under pressure from activist investors. The company has cut and reorganized management, and previously sold all but four of its wholly owned casinos to MGM Growth Properties Inc., a real estate investment trust it created three years ago. The REIT has an option to buy the MGM Springfield in Massachusetts.

The price for Bellagio represents 17.3 times the initial annual rent of $245 million, MGM said. Bloomberg News previously reported Blackstone was in talks to buy and lease back the Bellagio and MGM Grand. The property is being purchased by the Blackstone Real Estate Investment Trust.

MGM will use the proceeds to bolster its balance sheet and return capital to shareholders. Murren said the transactions will help the company target new growth opportunities, including one of the new integrated resource licenses in Japan and sports betting in the U.S. MGM has no plans to develop any more casinos in Las Vegas, he said.

Earlier Deals

Ruffin, a real estate mogul raised in Wichita, Kansas, will pay $662.5 million in cash for Circus Circus. The $162.5 million balance will be in a note that’s due in 2024. The parties expected to deal to close in the fourth quarter. The resort has 2,300 employees and includes a 20-acre RV park and 37-acre festival grounds.

Ruffin bought the Treasure Island casino from MGM for $746 million in 2009. The company then was trying to raise cash following the financial crisis and complete construction of its CityCenter project.

He fixed up Treasure Island, once known for its daily pirate battles outside, adding a western-themed barbecue restaurant and other amenities aimed at Middle American guests. Earlier, he partnered with Donald Trump on the Trump International Hotel, a non-casino hotel and condo development on the Strip.

Circus Circus, now more than 50 years old, was once a flagship property of publicly traded Circus Circus Enterprises. MGM ultimately acquired that company. The resort itself is located at the less-trafficked north end of the Strip.

The sale of Bellagio will provide a benchmark value to attract bidders for MGM’s remaining real estate interests, Murren said, including the CityCenter properties that are co-owned with Dubai World, and the flagship MGM Grand.

Murren also said he wasn’t concerned that Penn National Gaming Corp., another casino operator that had moved to a similar asset-light strategy, trades at a lower multiple of earnings than other casino companies. He said MGM’s assets make it unique.

MGM Resorts enlisted Weil, Gotshal & Manges as its legal counsel, while PJT Partners and JPMorgan Chase & Co. served as financial advisers. Blackstone’s REIT used Citigroup Inc. and Morgan Stanley as its financial advisers. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, meanwhile, was its legal counsel.

Amtrak Winter Park Express 2020 Tickets Now Available

Three roundtrips now every weekend from January 10 through March 29, with the popular $29 starting fares again this season

WINTER PARK, Colo. – Every weekend this ski season can last for three days instead of two, with Amtrak “ski train” roundtrips between Denver and Winter Park Resort on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, starting Jan. 10. Adult fares start at $29 each way and tickets are on sale now at Amtrak.com/WinterParkExpress. Each ticketed adult can bring a child age 2-12 for half the adult fare.

This will also be the second season of snack and beverage service using a Superliner® Sightseer Lounge Car, with windows from floor level and into the top of the railcar. Since 2017, more than 52,000 customers have avoided frustrating stop-and-go ski traffic on the roads to enjoy the service partnership on the rails by Amtrak and the resort named last year as the “Best in North America”. The 2020 Amtrak Winter Park Express will run each Friday, Saturday and Sunday through March 29. Jet Aviation Acquires Stake in Scottsdale Jet Center

TETERBORO, N.J., May 3, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Jet Aviation announced today that it has acquired a stake in Scottsdale Jet Center, with the intent to build and operate a new, state-of-the-art Jet Aviation branded fixed-base operator (FBO) and tenant hangar by late 2020. The new facility will complement existing tenant facilities at Scottsdale Airport, a top 15 US business aviation market.

With an expanding footprint in the US market, Scottsdale Jet Center allows Jet Aviation to continue its strategy of supporting customers in the locations they most frequent. The new facility will allow Jet Aviation to operate FBO’s in eight of the top 15 US business aviation markets.

Bombardier Reports 4th Quarter and Full Year 2018 Results

-EBIT before special items(1) up 42% year-over-year to more than $1.0B on revenues of $16.2B for the year; EBIT increased 235% year-over-year to $1.0B

Bombardier (TSX: BBD.B) today reported its fourth quarter and full year 2018 results, highlighting solid margin growth, improved cash flows and continued progress executing its turnaround plan. The successful entry-into-service of the Global 7500 business jet in the fourth quarter also marked the completion of Bombardier’s heavy investment cycle, a key milestone in the company’s turnaround plan.

Bombardier’s 2018 consolidated revenues reached $16.2 billion, reflecting 3% average year-over-year growth across Transportation, Business Aircraft and Aerostructures, excluding currency impact. Book-to-bill ratios(2) at Transportation and Business Aircraft both equaled 1.1 for the year, demonstrating strong demand for Bombardier’s products and services. Bombardier’s consolidated backlog reached $53.1 billion at the end of 2018, supporting future growth targets.

EBIT before special items continued to improve in 2018, increasing 42% year-over-year from $725 million to more than $1.0 billion, the top-end of the company’s guidance. The 6.3% EBIT margin before special items in 2018 represents a strong 330 bps increase since the start of the turnaround plan in 2015, well above the 5-6% range originally targeted. On a reported basis, EBIT increased 235% year-over-year to $1.0 billion, representing a margin of 6.2%.

Bombardier generated $1.0 billion of free cash flow in the fourth quarter of 2018. Full year free cash flow generation equaled $182 million, at the high end of the company’s revised guidance. This amount includes aggregate net proceeds of approximately $750 million from the sale of the Downsview property and the monetization of royalties associated with the previously announced CAE transaction. Cash flows from operating activities amounted to $597 million for the full year, and to $1.3 billion in the fourth quarter. Bombardier ended the year in a solid cash position, with $3.2 billion in cash and cash equivalents.

SEGMENTED RESULTS AND HIGHLIGHTS

Business Aircraft

Business Aircraft achieved a historical milestone in December 2018 with the on plan service entry of the largest and longest range industry flagship Global 7500 aircraft. With a strong backlog and unsurpassed performance in its category, the Global 7500 is expected to be Business Aircraft’s key growth driver for years to come.

Revenues, EBIT before special items and deliveries were in line with guidance for 2018.

The segment achieved industry leading deliveries at 137 aircraft for 2018, including 42 Global, 83 Challenger and 12 Learjet.

Continued progress on the aftermarket strategy drove a 14.3% revenue increase year-over-year. Further expansion of our service network was also announced with the groundbreaking for a new centre in Miami, Florida to service U.S. and Latin American customers.

During the year, Business Aircraft unveiled the new Global 5500 and Global 6500 aircraft featuring an all-new Rolls-Royce engine and a newly optimized wing, increasing the aircraft range and fuel burn performance. With flight testing at advanced stages, these performance-leading aircraft are expected to enter into service at the end of 2019.

Commercial Aircraft

In 2018, Commercial Aircraft significantly reshaped its portfolio, focusing on the CRJ Series program and its aftermarket business, while also participating in the growth of the A220 through its partnership with Airbus:

The C Series Partnership (CSALP) with Airbus closed on July 1, 2018, bringing together two complementary product lines and the benefit of Airbus’ global reach, creating significant value potential for the newly rebranded A220.

A definitive agreement was reached with Longview Aircraft Company of Canada Limited for the sale of the Q Series aircraft program assets, including aftermarket operations and assets, for gross proceeds of approximately $300 million, on November 7, 2018. The transaction is expected to close by the second half of 2019, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Net proceeds for this transaction are expected at approximately $250 million net of fees, liabilities and normal closing adjustments.

Revenues and aircraft deliveries for 2018 were in line with guidance on the basis of the deconsolidation of CSALP results from Commercial Aircraft since July 1, 2018.

EBIT loss before special items(11) was $157 million reflecting for the most part losses on the C Series program in the first half of the year and the post-closing CSALP equity pickup. EBIT loss of $755 million includes a $616 million pre-tax accounting charge related to the closing of the CSALP transaction.

Commercial Aircraft continues to actively participate in the regional aircraft market with the established scope-compliant CRJ Series aircraft, with a focus on reducing costs and increasing volumes while optimizing the aftermarket for the large installed base in service around the world today. As the focus is to return the program to profitability, Bombardier also announced in 2018 it is exploring strategic options for the program.

Aerostructures and Engineering Services

Aerostructures and Engineering Services is positioned as a key supplier on early life cycle growth programs, including the new A220 and Global 7500 aircraft, expected to drive sustainable growth.

In 2018, the segment revenues grew 21% year-over-year to $2.0 billion in line with guidance.

Focused execution during the ramp-up of these programs and a one-time favorable item (approximately 50 bps) associated with the closing of the C Series Partnership have enabled to deliver 9.6% EBIT before special items, above its guidance. EBIT margin for the segment was 7.5%.

On February 6, 2019, the Corporation acquired the Global 7500 aircraft wing program operations and assets from Triumph Group Inc., for a nominal cash consideration. This transaction is expected to strengthen Bombardier’s position as a leading aerostructures manufacturer, to enable the company to leverage its extensive technical expertise to support the ramp-up of the Global 7500 aircraft, and to enhance its long-term success. Bombardier will continue to operate the production line and integrate the employees currently supporting the program at Triumph’s Red Oak, Texas facility.

On February 7, 2019, Paul Sislian was appointed President, Aerostructures and Engineering Services. Paul brings more than 20 years of aerospace and industrial experience, including serving most recently as Chief Operating Officer for Bombardier Business Aircraft.

Transportation

On February 7, 2019, Danny Di Perna was appointed President, Bombardier Transportation. Danny brings more than 30 years of industrial experience to this new role. He has a proven record of success leading complex industrial projects and organizations, driving operational efficiency and improving quality. Most recently, Danny led Bombardier’s Aerostructures and Engineering Services segment.

In 2018, Transportation recorded orders totaling $9.9 billion, fueled by a $3.3 billion order intake in the fourth quarter. Book-to-bill(2) reached 1.5 for the fourth quarter, resulting in a 1.1 ratio for the full year, continuing to position the segment for growth in revenues and profitability, supported by strong industry fundamentals.

Order intake for the year reflects project wins across geographies, with notable contract awards in Europe, led by SNCF’s repeat order in France, in Asia led by the Singapore Metro contract, and North America with Airport and Mass transit mobility solutions for Phoenix and Los Angeles.

The backlog reached $34.5 billion as at December 31, 2018. The backlog growth (excluding currency fluctuations) was supported by a stronger mix of platform projects and increasing signalling and service contract orders, consistent with Transportation’s strategy to increase speed-to-market; provide customers with end-to-end solutions; de-risk project execution while also growing margins.

Subsequent to the fourth quarter, in January 2019, Transportation was awarded a contract to supply 113 new generation passenger rail cars valued at $669 million with options for up to 886 additional cars, by the New Jersey Transit Corporation.

Financial performance for 2018 positions Transportation to reach 2019 guidance:

Revenues grew 4% year-over-year to $8.9 billion, in line with guidance, supported by a favourable currency impact in the first half of the year (2% growth excluding currency impact). Services and signalling grew to over 34% of revenues for the year, as increasing focus turns to integrated customer solutions.

EBIT before special items grew to $750 million for the year, representing an 8.4% margin (EBIT of $774 million, or 8.7% margin). Fourth quarter margins before special items were 7.7% (10.9% EBIT margin), as a result of contract estimate adjustments largely associated with a legacy project, resulting in full year margins before special items, slightly below the 8.5% guidance.

As discussed at the Company’s December 2018 Investor Day, Transportation continues to advance a number of legacy projects. The Company has plans in place and is taking actions to finalize system integration, obtain homologation and align delivery schedules with customers. Bombardier expects to substantially complete deliveries on most of these projects and significantly recover working capital through 2019.

As the portfolio continues to improve, Transportation anticipates growing EBIT margins before special items to approximately 9% for 2019, in line with guidance.

CDPQ Investment in BT Holdco

The Company also announced that Transportation’s results in 2018 did not reach the performance targets underlying Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec’s (CDPQ) investment in BT Holdco. Accordingly, for the 12-month period starting on February 12, 2019, Bombardier’s percentage of ownership on conversion of CDPQ’s shares will decrease by 2.5%, returning to the original 70%; and the preference return entitlement rate on liquidation of its shares will increase from 7.5% to 9.5% for this period. Any dividends paid by BT Holdco to its shareholders during this period will be distributed on the basis of each shareholder’s percentage of ownership upon conversion, being 70% for Bombardier and 30% for CDPQ. These adjustments will become effective once the audited consolidated financial statements of BT Holdco are duly approved by its board of directors.

Embraer Signs Contract to Support Germany’s WDL Aviation E190s fleet

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, February 7th, 2019 – Embraer and WDL Aviation GmbH, a German charter and ACMI airline headquartered at Cologne Bonn Airport and part of the Zeitfracht logistics group, have signed an agreement on a Flight Hour Pool Program to support the airline’s recently leased fleet of four used E190s.

WDL, which becomes a new Embraer E-Jet family customer in 2019, leased the aircraft to replace their current fleet. They will start flying the E190s from March 2019.

The Pool Agreement, which will be in effect during the duration of the lease, covers access to a large stock of components at Embraer’s distribution center in Paris (France), full repair coverage and a selected list of essential components, parts and services to support the start of aircraft operations.

WDL Aviation is a leading provider of ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, Insurance) services in Europe. With the Pool Program, part of the TechCare suite of services that Embraer offers to support the growing fleet of Embraer aircraft worldwide, WDL will have the flexibility to access the parts and support the fleet quickly.

Embraer’s Flight Hour Pool Program, which currently supports more than 40 airlines worldwide, is designed to allow airlines to minimize their upfront investment on expensive repairable inventories and resources and to take advantage of Embraer’s technical expertise and its vast component repair service provider network. The results are significant savings on repair and inventory carrying costs, reduction in required warehousing space, and the elimination of resources required for repair management, while ultimately providing guaranteed performance levels.

This Pool Program is part of a suite of services that Embraer offers or has under development to support the worldwide growing fleet of Embraer aircraft through TechCare, the new Embraer platform that assembles the entire portfolio of products and solutions to deliver the best experience of services and support.
